Description
Glycine Bleumer is a central character from the anime Sakura Taisen: Ecole de Paris. She is a sixteen-year-old girl of French and Norman ancestry. She hails from a prestigious line, as she is the sole heir to the Bleumer family, a great noble house. Physically, she is of a modest stature with blonde hair and light blue eyes.
Her personality is defined by a strong sense of pride and responsibility that comes from her aristocratic upbringing. She is deeply preoccupied with the concept of nobility and how a person of her status should act to contribute positively to society. This sense of duty is coupled with an aggressive and hot-blooded temperament, a trait attributed to her Viking heritage. She is extremely proud, but this pride is supported by genuine talent and a willingness to work hard. She does not tolerate insults to her honor and can react with fierce words or challenges. Despite her harsh exterior, she has a strong sense of humanity and a desire to protect the weak. She is also known to have a fondness for small animals.
Motivated by her duty as a noble and as a protector of her city, Glycine joins the Paris Assault Force, which is also known as the Paris Combat Revue. She maintains her secret identity by working as a dancer at the cabaret Chattes Noires under the stage name Blue Eyes, sneaking out of her family estate with the help of her personal head maid, Tarebou.
Within the story of Sakura Taisen: Ecole de Paris, Glycine plays a key role as a founding member of the Paris Kagekidan's Hanagumi, or Fleur Division. She is a close friend to Hanabi Kitaoji, who lives in the Bleumer family palace, and is very protective of her. She shares a notable bond with her teammate Erica Fontaine, a friendship characterized by Erica's antics leaving Glycine exasperated, though she cares for her deeply and is protective of her. Conversely, her relationship with the rebellious Lobelia Carlini is like oil and water, marked by constant rivalry, though they can put their differences aside in serious moments to protect others. Early in the series, she displays a strong pride as a protector of Paris and is initially skeptical of a foreigner's ability to lead her team. At one point following the departure of the previous captain, she declares herself as the new captain of the Paris Assault Force.
Glycine undergoes significant development as she clashes with and eventually comes to respect the genuine nature of a foreign captain. Through various trials and a duel, she begins to question the superficial constraints of her noble title. When faced with a pre-arranged engagement to a noble named Count Richie, she finds herself trapped by family expectations. However, the captain's actions help expose the true character of her betrothed, leading to the engagement's dissolution and allowing Glycine to break free from the purely transactional expectations of her rank. By the end of the anime's story arc, she undergoes a notable shift in leadership, ultimately setting aside her own ambition to nominate Erica Fontaine as the team captain, a decision that the other members support unanimously. This moment underscores her development from a proud aristocrat bound by duty to someone who values true character and capability over status.
In combat, Glycine is a powerhouse. Her martial talent lies in the use of the halberd, a medieval polearm, but her weapons of choice are a battle axe and shield, as well as a great axe paired with an arm-mounted buckler. She is an expert in close-quarters combat, and her fighting style is aggressive and powerful, reflecting her fierce and direct personality in battle.
