Description
"Fake" is a seven-episode anime OVA series based on the manga by Sanami Matoh, blending elements of crime, mystery, and romance. The story is set in New York City and centers on two detectives, Ryo McLean and Dee Laytner, who work together in the 27th Precinct. Ryo, a reserved and disciplined Japanese-American detective, contrasts sharply with Dee, a brash and flirtatious American with a penchant for humor and a persistent romantic interest in Ryo. Their partnership forms the core of the narrative, as they navigate both professional and personal dynamics.

The series opens with the duo investigating a series of murders linked to a counterfeit currency operation. As they delve deeper, they uncover a larger conspiracy involving international crime syndicates and corrupt officials. The case becomes increasingly personal when Ryo’s younger brother, Bikky, is targeted by the criminals, forcing Ryo and Dee to confront their vulnerabilities and strengthen their bond. The investigation also introduces other key characters, such as JJ, a street-smart informant, and Berkeley Rose, their enigmatic and calculating superior.

Throughout the series, the relationship between Ryo and Dee evolves from a professional partnership to a deeper emotional connection, marked by moments of tension, humor, and mutual reliance. The narrative balances crime-solving with character development, exploring themes of trust, loyalty, and the complexities of human relationships. The OVA concludes with the resolution of the counterfeit case, though the personal dynamics between the characters remain open-ended, reflecting the ongoing nature of their partnership and emotional journey. The series is notable for its blend of action, mystery, and subtle romantic undertones, making it a distinctive entry in the crime genre.
