Mona Marshall
Description
Mona Marshall is an American voice actress with a career spanning several decades, known for her extensive work in anime dubbing as well as American animation. Born on August 31, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, she began her career in the entertainment industry in the 1970s. Marshall's path to voice acting was unconventional; she originally trained for the stage and was working as a fifth-grade teacher when the mother of one of her students suggested she take a voice-over class taught by the legendary Daws Butler, the voice of Yogi Bear. This mentorship launched her new career.
Marshall is particularly recognized for her ability to portray young male characters, a niche she has filled consistently throughout her career. Her voice credits encompass a wide range of Japanese anime series, American cartoons, feature films, and video games. In the realm of anime, she is celebrated for her long-standing role as Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi in the Digimon franchise, a character she has voiced in numerous series and films, including Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna and Digimon Adventure tri.: Future. Another iconic role is providing the English voice for the title character Doraemon in the Bang Zoom! Entertainment dub of the long-running robot-cat series, including the films Stand By Me Doraemon and its sequel. Her other notable anime roles span a variety of series, such as the determined Chagum in Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit, the wolf cub Toboe in Wolf's Rain, the young sorceress Motoko Aoyama in Love Hina, Jun Sakurada in Rozen Maiden, Konekomaru Miwa in Blue Exorcist, and Grace Lin in Eiken. She has also been active in recent years, taking on the role of Shuichi's mother in the 2024 anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki.
In addition to her anime work, Marshall is widely known for her contributions to American television. Since 1999, she has been a core cast member on the long-running animated series South Park, where she voices several prominent female characters, including Sheila Broflovski and Linda Stotch, taking over the former role after the passing of Mary Kay Bergman. Her voice can also be heard in a multitude of other animated projects, such as Amphibia, Rugrats, and various productions for franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe. Her film work includes voicing characters in major animated features like Wreck-It Ralph, The Secret Life of Pets, and Tangled.
Throughout her prolific career, Mona Marshall has demonstrated a remarkable range and longevity, becoming a familiar and respected voice to generations of animation fans. Her ability to bring both human and non-human characters to life, from young heroes to comedic mothers, has solidified her status as a significant figure in the voice acting community.
