Description
Ascot begins his journey in Magic Knight Rayearth as a young summoner who serves the high priest Zagato. His background is one of loneliness and rejection. Possessing the rare and powerful ability to summon monsters, he considered these creatures his only friends. However, the people of Cefiro feared the monsters’ grotesque appearances, leading to Ascot and his companions being shunned and driven from village to village. Zagato offered him a home and a place for his monster friends within his palace, and in exchange, Ascot agreed to use his powers to stop the Magic Knights.

In this initial phase, Ascot appears as a cynical child who uses his summoned creatures as weapons, believing that force and cruelty are the only ways to protect what he values. Despite this harsh exterior, he is inwardly shy and deeply cares for his monstrous companions, treating them as friends rather than mere tools. His motivations are rooted not in true malice but in a desperate desire for belonging and security. A pivotal confrontation with the Magic Knights, particularly Umi Ryuzaki, changes his course. Umi slaps him and delivers a harsh lecture about how he is using and hurting his own friends, which forces Ascot to reevaluate his actions. This moment of clarity leads him to abandon Zagato and seek a better path.

In Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Ascot undergoes a dramatic transformation, appearing not as a child but as a tall, calm, and handsome young man. This rapid aging is a physical manifestation of his personal growth and the strength of his will, directly inspired by the lessons he learned from Umi, for whom he develops strong romantic feelings. His personality has matured significantly; he is now gentle, thoughtful, and devoted to protecting Cefiro. He becomes a staunch ally of the Magic Knights, fighting alongside other former enemies like Caldina and Lafarga to defend the land from new threats, such as the invading nations of Autozam, Fahren, and Chizeta, as well as the monsters of Debonair.

His key relationships evolve considerably. His bond with Umi remains central, as his affection for her drives much of his determination. While he is open about his feelings, Umi responds with a platonic love, caring for him as she does for all her friends in Cephiro, which he accepts with maturity. He also forms a close, sibling-like bond with Caldina, and they are often seen supporting one another in battle. He becomes a student of the high mage Clef, learning new spells to expand his magical repertoire.

Ascot’s development is the core of his character, moving from a lonely, misguided child to a responsible and heroic young man. His growth is symbolized by his changed appearance and his new approach to magic. While he continues to summon monsters, he strives to avoid using them as living weapons, having learned other forms of magic to defend himself and his friends. His notable abilities center on his power as a summoner, called a Palu. He can call forth a variety of large, powerful creatures, each often named after a car model. He also gains the ability to use other spells and can travel on a small flying rock platform. In the second series, his role is to stand as a guardian of Cefiro, using his formidable powers to protect the land and the people who once feared him, having finally found a home and true friendship.
