Description
"Magic Knight Rayearth" is a fantasy anime series that blends elements of magical girl and mecha genres. The narrative centers on three middle school girls—Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji—who are transported from Tokyo to the magical world of Cephiro. In Cephiro, the land's stability depends on the prayers of its Pillar, Princess Emeraude. However, the princess has been kidnapped by the high priest Zagato, plunging Cephiro into chaos. The three girls are chosen as Magic Knights, destined to save the world by rescuing Emeraude and restoring balance.
Each girl is granted a unique elemental affinity and a corresponding weapon: Hikaru wields the Sword of Fire, Umi commands the Sword of Water, and Fuu utilizes the Sword of Wind. As they journey through Cephiro, they encounter allies such as Master Mage Clef, the warrior Ferio, and the mischievous Mokona, who aids them in their quest. The trio faces numerous trials, battling Zagato's forces and overcoming personal challenges to unlock their full potential as Magic Knights. Their journey is marked by the discovery of powerful mecha-like beings called Rune Gods, which they pilot in climactic battles.
The story takes a dramatic turn when the Magic Knights finally confront Zagato and learn the truth about Princess Emeraude. It is revealed that Emeraude's love for Zagato has caused her to abandon her duties as the Pillar, leading to Cephiro's instability. To restore order, the Magic Knights are forced to make a heartbreaking decision, culminating in a bittersweet resolution. The narrative explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and the consequences of love, as the girls grapple with the moral complexities of their mission.
The series is divided into two seasons, with the second season introducing new challenges and antagonists, further expanding the world of Cephiro and deepening the characters' development. The blend of magical girl tropes with mecha action and a richly layered fantasy setting makes "Magic Knight Rayearth" a distinctive and engaging story within the anime genre.

1The Birth of the Legendary Magic Knights!
Hikaru Shidou,Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji attend separate school field trips to Tokyo Tower. A mysterious voice calls out, and the tower vanishes beneath the three girls. They fall through a void and land on a giant flying fish named Fyula. Fyula deposits them on a cliff in the magical world of Cephiro. The mage Clef meets them there and explains that Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro, used her final strength to summon them. High Priest Zagato kidnapped Emeraude, and without her prayers, Cephiro collapses into chaos with roaming monsters. Clef states the girls cannot return to Tokyo until they fulfill Emeraude's wish by becoming the legendary Magic Knights and saving the land. He awakens magical power in Hikaru first, manifesting as fire. From his fortress, Zagato observes the arrival and orders his subordinate Alcyone to eliminate the knights before they gain strength. Clef senses Alcyone's approach, summons a griffin, and sends the three girls toward the Forest of Silence to find the weaponsmith Presea. Alcyone attacks Clef, but Zagato strikes from a distance and turns the mage into solid stone, causing him to fall from the cliff. Alcyone catches up to the griffin and attacks the girls. Hikaru stands her ground and unleashes her first spell, Flame Arrow, which destroys Alcyone's mount and forces the sorceress to retreat. The effort exhausts Hikaru, and she collapses. Umi expresses only a desire to return home, while Fuu argues they have no choice but to proceed together. The three agree to continue their journey toward Presea's home, now without Clef's guidance and with Zagato's forces actively hunting them.
2Presea - The Master Smith In The Forest Of Silence
Clef summons a griffin that carries Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu to the Silent Forest. The griffin disappears upon arrival because magic does not function in this region. Hikaru touches the wall of a fortress-like building, which opens an entrance for the three girls. Inside, they trigger a cage trap and meet Presea, the master smith who created the trap to catch Mokona, a small white creature causing mischief in her workshop. A earth-based monster attacks the fortress, forcing Presea to free the girls from the cage. Presea instructs each girl to close her eyes and select a weapon from her armory by listening to her heart. Hikaru receives a sword, Umi receives a rapier, and Fuu receives a bow and arrows. The monster regenerates from their attacks because its body consists of mud. Hikaru leads the monster to a pond, and the group pushes it into the water, causing it to dissolve completely. Presea explains that the girls must travel to Eterna Lake to retrieve a mineral called Escudo, which will allow her to forge permanent weapons that grow stronger with their owners. The weapons vanish into the gems on the girls' gloves, ready to be summoned again for the next battle. The Magic Knights set out through the Silent Forest toward Eterna Lake, unaware that Alcyone watches their progress from a distance.
3Ferio - the Handsome - Mysterious Swordsman
While traveling to the Spring of Eterna,Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu encounter a young swordsman named Ferio who rescues them from a monster. Ferio offers to serve as their guide out of the Forest of Silence. The girls initially refuse and attempt to lose him, but he continues following them. They agree to let him guide them and pay him with food since they carry no money. Ferio reveals he once worked as an entertainer and Princess Emeraude saved his life when guards accused him of stealing from the castle. The princess declared the egg-shaped treasure a gift to him, inspiring his quest to rescue her. Mokona creates a large tent for the girls to rest. Fuu brings food to Ferio outside, and he asks her to stay with him, causing her to blush and retreat inside. The next day, the group encounters numerous monsters surrounding a rock formation. Hikaru and Umi engage the monsters while Ferio charges the rock, but a spell freezes him. Ferio warns Fuu not to approach. Fuu shoots the rock from a distance with her bow, destroying it and causing the remaining monsters to revert to their true forms. The group exits the forest, and Ferio gives the egg-shaped treasure to Fuu as a gift, declaring his love for her before running off. The Magic Knights continue their journey toward the Spring of Eterna, unaware that the sorceress Alcyone still hunts them.
4Alcyone - the Vengeful Sorceress
Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu continue traveling through Cephiro with Mokona. Umi expresses frustration that only Hikaru can use magic. The group reaches a village that appears deserted. Villagers trap the three in a net, revealing they hide from monsters corrupting their land. A monster appears and chases a young girl. Hikaru draws the monster's attention and defeats it with her magic. Umi suggests hurrying to Eterna to obtain Escudo. Alcyone suddenly attacks from hiding, striking Umi with Ice Arrows. Umi collapses. Alcyone challenges Hikaru directly. Hikaru fights Alcyone alone, her anger fueling her strength. Umi regains consciousness and sees Hikaru battling to protect her. Umi turns to Mokona and wishes for magic. Clef communicates through Mokona and grants Umi magical power. Umi rises and casts a Water Dragon spell, blasting Alcyone. Alcyone retreats. Fuu immediately asks Mokona for her magic as well and receives it. Fuu heals Umi and the injured young girl. The villagers remain distrustful and return to hiding. The little girl gives Hikaru a flower in thanks before her mother pulls her away. The three Magic Knights continue their journey toward the Fountain of Eternity, carrying the knowledge that Zagato's rule has left deep scars on Cephiro's people.
5Escudo - the Legendary Ore
Alcyone appears before Zagato and begs for another chance to eliminate the Magic Knights, claiming she has a plan. The three girls reach a lake and Mokona indicates it is not Eterna. A water monster rises from the lake and attacks them; Umi destroys it with her Water Dragon spell. The monster's remains rain down on the girls, causing them to glow briefly before the effect fades. Alcyone watches from a distance and laughs to herself. The party arrives at the location Mokona identifies as Eterna but sees only a thin line floating in the air. Hikaru climbs a rock pillar and discovers a spring visible only from above; Fuu realizes Eterna exists as a two-dimensional plane. Mokona jumps into the spring and the girls follow. They separate during the descent and each encounters a vision of a loved one: Hikaru sees her dog Hikari, Umi sees her parents, and Fuu sees herself. The visions attack the girls, who refuse to fight back. Princess Emeraude's voice asks them to reconsider whether they face their true loved ones. Each girl recognizes the illusions and destroys them using newly awakened spells: Hikaru gains Red Lightning, Umi gains Blue Tornado, and Fuu gains Green Gale. A piece of the legendary ore Escudo appears before each knight. Alcyone arrives and reveals that her water monster contained a slow-acting poison that now weakens the girls. She declares her intention to take the Escudo for herself. The Escudo pieces rush into the girls' glove jewels, upgrading their armor. The Magic Knights use their new spells to drive Alcyone away. They return to Presea so she can forge new weapons from the Escudo and awaken the legendary Rune Gods. Back at Zagato's stronghold, Alcyone begs again for forgiveness, but Zagato dismisses her and sends another warrior named Ascot to destroy the knights.
6Lives at Stake - Presea's Weapons
Ascot dispatches a caterpillar-like creature to kill the Magic Knights and then takes a nap. The girls arrive at Presea's house in the Forest of Silence and hand over the Escudo along with their current weapons. Presea retreats to a separate room to forge the new weapons from the rare metal. The creature reaches the house and attacks the Magic Knights, who manage to defend themselves but cannot defeat it. The monster turns away from the girls and heads directly toward Presea's workshop. Despite her weakening condition from the forging effort, Presea completes the new weapons just as the creature breaks into the room. The building sustains heavy damage from the monster's assault, and a section of the ceiling collapses onto Presea. The Magic Knights retrieve their newly forged weapons—each receives a sword—and use them to slay the creature. The girls rush to Presea's side, but she dies from her injuries, and Hikaru vows to avenge her death. Ascot wakes from his nap, calls for his creature, and discovers its remains among the destroyed house. He then swears to avenge his creature's death, setting both sides on a path of mutual vengeance.
7Ferio in Desperation: A Romance in the Desert
Clef contacts the girls and explains that each earthquake in Cephiro signals the world's collapse. If Cephiro falls completely, they cannot return to their own world. He instructs them to awaken their Rune Gods, with Mokona guiding the way. Ferio encounters Ascot, who plans to attack the Magic Knights with a sand monster named Pajero. Ferio pretends to admire Zagato and offers to lure the girls into the desert in exchange for meeting Zagato. Ascot agrees. Ferio meets the girls in a town and leads them to the desert, where the monster attacks. The creature's gusts prevent the girls from casting spells. Ferio tricks Ascot into revealing the monster's weakness: it navigates by sound and travels through sand. Using the brooch that records voices, Ferio replays the girls' shouts and lures the monster away, allowing them to escape. Ascot captures Ferio and sends a messenger monster demanding the girls surrender by morning. That night, Fuu sneaks out alone to save Ferio. She confronts Ascot and Pajero but loses her sword to the monster's wind. Ferio jumps in to protect her and again uses the brooch to distract the creature. Fuu's sword flies back to her hand and transforms into a more powerful version. She allows the monster to swallow her and then cuts it apart from the inside, destroying it. Ferio returns the brooch to Fuu and departs, leaving Ascot to swear vengeance for his fallen monster. The episode closes with Ascot's renewed determination to kill the Magic Knights.
8The Horrible Trap of Summoner Ascot
Ascot,a summoner serving Zagato, lures the three Magic Knights into his fortress. He sets a trap that separates the girls and forces them to navigate a mansion of illusions. Ascot summons various creatures to attack Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. Hikaru encounters a small, friendly monster that shows no hostility toward her. She forms a bond with the creature, treating it as a companion rather than an enemy. Ascot reveals that Hikaru cannot escape the trap unless she kills this creature. The summoner places Hikaru in an impossible position: strike down her new friend or remain trapped forever. Hikaru hesitates, struggling against the necessity of violence. Umi and Fuu cannot reach her in time to offer an alternative. Hikaru ultimately raises her sword and delivers the fatal blow. The creature's death causes Hikaru's emotional distress to peak. Her sword absorbs her anguish and transforms, evolving into a more powerful weapon. This evolution occurs without the usual triumphant music, replacing it with a somber tone. Ascot's trap fails as the knights reunite and fight their way out of the fortress. The experience leaves Hikaru visibly shaken but more determined to complete her mission. The knights resume their journey toward the imprisoned Princess Emeraude, carrying the memory of Hikaru's sacrifice. The episode sets up the knights' continued search for the Rune Gods as Zagato's forces regroup and prepare new obstacles.
9The Magic Knights' Greatest Crisis
Umi wakes from a nightmare about a fencing tournament in Tokyo. She finds herself back in Cephiro and expresses frustration at missing her competition. At Zagato's base,Alcyone tricks Ascot into freeing her from imprisonment. She promises Ascot an elixir that will empower his beast to defeat the Magic Knights. Alcyone gives the elixir to Ascot's snail-like monster. The beast summons a massive blizzard and then freezes solid, losing its life. Hikaru and Fuu become trapped in the blizzard while Mokona freezes. Hikaru attempts to use her fire magic to melt the ice but fails. Umi suddenly finds herself standing alone at Tokyo Tower. Her friends and fencing club members stand frozen in time around her. Umi realizes her worry for Hikaru and Fuu has created this illusory world through her own will. She chooses to return to Cephiro to complete the mission. Hikaru and Fuu collapse from the cold as Alcyone approaches to kill them. Umi arrives in time to block Alcyone's attack. Umi's sword evolves into a more powerful form during the battle. She defeats Alcyone and reunites with Hikaru and Fuu. Ascot mourns the death of his beast and apologizes to Zagato for being deceived by Alcyone.
10The Revival of Selece - the Legendary Rune-God
The Magic Knights continue their search for the Rune-Gods to save Cephiro. They reach a lake where Mokona reveals a Rune-God beneath the water. Mokona creates an underwater capsule that transports the group to an air-filled shrine. Umi feels unwell and begins to glow. She wanders away from Hikaru and Fuu. A painting of a blue dragon on the shrine wall animates and separates Umi behind large doors. Ascot arrives with a sea monster and attacks Hikaru and Fuu. The knights' initial attacks deal little damage to the creature. Fuu notices a glowing jewel on the monster's head. Hikaru strikes the jewel and breaks it,stunning the monster. Ascot emerges from hiding and accuses the knights of killing his monster friends. Hikaru responds that a true friend would not harm others. The monster recovers consciousness and goes berserk. Ascot flees, leaving Hikaru and Fuu to fight the rampaging creature alone. Inside the sealed room, the dragon tests Umi's courage by demanding she prove her heart's resolve. Umi hears Hikaru and Fuu screaming from the other side of the doors. The doors suddenly disappear, reuniting the three knights. Umi must now face the dragon's trial while her companions continue their battle against Ascot's monster.
11The Legend of the Rune-Gods - In Cephiro - Another World
The Magic Knights fly toward the floating mountain that holds Princess Emeraude's castle. Zagato intercepts them and attacks directly. Princess Emeraude intervenes from her prison and transports the girls to safety near Piraus Village. Ferio receives a message from Emeraude and meets the knights at the lake outside the village. The group enters the village to rest. Caldina,an illusionist working for Zagato for payment, demands money from the terrified villagers. She spots the Magic Knights and changes her approach upon seeing them. Ferio devises a trick that exploits Caldina's greed, allowing the girls to escape the village. Ferio then reveals the legend of the Magic Knights: three warriors from another world who appear whenever Cephiro's Pillar faces a threat. Only these knights can awaken and control the three Rune-Gods, the only beings with enough power to save the world. The memory of Zagato's overwhelming attack shakes the girls' confidence, and they fear they cannot fulfill their mission. Ferio's encouragement restores their determination to continue. The episode closes with the knights resolving to seek out the Rune-Gods despite the dangers ahead.
12The Fearsome Illusionist Caldina
Mokona directs the Magic Knights upward toward a floating mountain that houses a hidden Rune-God machine. Caldina and Ascot catch up to the group, and Caldina orders Ascot to wait while she handles the knights alone. Caldina casts an illusion spell that makes the ground feel soft and unstable, then causes large rocks to rain down on the girls. The knights panic and fall into a deep pit, losing consciousness. They wake inside a cave where the ground continues to shake around them. Inside the cave, they encounter Clef, who claims he has rescued Princess Emeraude and that the princess wishes to speak with them. Fuu immediately doubts the claim and warns the others that the situation seems too easy. The girls proceed into another chamber and find Princess Emeraude flanked by two guards. Fuu asks how they could possibly defeat Zagato, testing the princess's response. The figures of Emeraude and the guards suddenly transform into monsters and launch an attack on the knights. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu recognize that they are trapped inside an illusion. The monsters can harm the knights, but the knights' attacks cannot hurt the monsters. The three girls close their eyes and concentrate, attempting to break the illusion through sheer will. The episode ends with Caldina observing the knights struggle, leaving them trapped until they can see through her deception.
13The Most Valuable Thing in this World
Caldina continues pursuing Zagato's monetary reward and sets a trap for the Magic Knights. Ascot attempts to convince Caldina to abandon the attack, but she refuses. Caldina separates Fuu from Hikaru and Umi using a diversion. She then uses her bells to hypnotize Hikaru and Umi, turning them against Fuu. Fuu employs her magic to restrain her controlled friends without harming them. Caldina reveals her position and forces Fuu to strike Hikaru and Umi. Ascot intervenes by blocking one of Fuu's attacks. Caldina responds by freezing Ascot in place. Fuu breaks free from Caldina's control and lands a spell on her. After the fight ceases, Caldina and Fuu engage in a conversation. Fuu explains that she cares for her companions and even for Ascot despite limited acquaintance. Witnessing Ascot's change of heart, Caldina reconsiders her allegiance. She unfreezes Ascot, and Hikaru and Umi regain their normal state. Hikaru and Umi initially prepare to attack Caldina, but Fuu stops them and explains the situation. Caldina and Ascot declare they will not return to Zagato's castle and flee together. The episode closes with the three Magic Knights having reduced Zagato's forces by two former servants.
14Hikaru - Umi - and Fuu's Unyielding Wish
A strange flash of light interrupts the three Magic Knights and takes Umi and Fuu along with Mokona. Hikaru remains behind and immediately begins searching the surrounding land for her missing companions. She recalls a map projected by Mokona and uses it to navigate toward the light's location. Sharp thorns cut Hikaru's arm as she moves through dense vegetation, and blood drips from the wound. The light then shifts its attention toward Hikaru, but Mokona pushes her out of the way and enters the light in her place. Hikaru falls into a ravine and suffers multiple blows to the head from falling rocks as she attempts to climb out. She realizes that the monster, a moving wall of light, responds to the presence of blood and uses its attraction to living creatures as its hunting method. The episode reveals that monsters in Cephiro manifest from fearful and terrified hearts, making the Knights' emotional resolve a critical factor in their survival. Hikaru's family background emerges as she recalls her three brothers and her family's kendo school, while Fuu's experience on her school's archery team and Umi's fencing background inform their approaches to combat. Hikaru cuts herself further to draw the light's attention away from Mokona, demonstrating her willingness to sacrifice her own safety for her friends. The episode ends with Hikaru still trapped in the ravine, bleeding heavily, and facing the approaching light monster alone.
15The Second Rune-God: Windam - the Lord of the Skies
Zagato permits Innova to attempt killing the Magic Knights. A storm forces Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu to take shelter in a cave near the sky shrine that holds another Rune-God. Fuu contacts Ferio through her communicator, and he arrives at the cave carrying an unconscious girl named Selah. Selah claims she gathers herbs to cure her brother's fever and stays with the group. During the night, Selah prepares soup with her herbs and gives it to Ferio to taste. The next morning, Ferio falls ill, and Selah volunteers to care for him. The three girls ascend the mountain alone and awaken Windam, the Rune-God of the skies, which takes the form of a phoenix. Windam designates Fuu as its chosen knight and requires her to prove her courage. Innova reveals his true identity as Zagato's servant, takes Ferio hostage, and demands Fuu renounce her status as a Magic Knight in exchange for Ferio's freedom. Fuu refuses to surrender her position and prepares to fight despite Innova's greater power. Windam recognizes Fuu's resolve and intervenes directly, forcing Innova to retreat. The girls receive upgraded armor and swords as a reward, leaving only one Rune-God remaining to be found.
16A Powerful Foe! Lafarga the Swordmaster
Zagato informs Princess Emeraude that he has placed one of her royal guards under mind control to eliminate the Magic Knights. Emeraude pleads with Zagato to stop, but he refuses. The three knights travel toward a volcano shrine to revive Hikaru's Rune-God. A giant flying bird attacks them and seizes Umi. Fuu attempts to hand Umi her own sword, but Umi's blade transforms into water upon Fuu's touch. Fuu throws her own sword to Umi, but the weight proves too heavy for Umi, and she drops it. A stranger kills the bird, allowing Hikaru and Fuu to catch Umi. The girls discover that each sword bonds only to its owner, becoming impossibly heavy for anyone else. Umi tries to thank their rescuer, but he identifies himself as Lafarga and attacks them. Lafarga traps Umi and Fuu, then overpowers Hikaru in combat. He grabs Hikaru's sword to use against her, but the blade burns his hand. The burn breaks Zagato's mind control, and Lafarga regains his memories. He reveals his former position as captain of the Royal Guard and promises to help the Magic Knights save Emeraude before departing. The knights continue toward the volcano shrine to restore Hikaru's Rune-God, unaware that Zagato will send even stronger enemies against them.
17The Truth About Inouva - and the Return of Memories
Inouva pleads with Zagato to restore his original form. Zagato complies and transforms Inouva into a massive wolf-like beast. The creature immediately attacks the Magic Knights. Ferio experiences a flood of returning memories and realizes he is Princess Emeraude's younger brother. He races across Cephiro toward the knights' location. Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu struggle against the beast's ferocious attacks. Their weapons and magic barely slow the creature down. When the knights near defeat, Ferio's voice comes through the communication orb Mokona carries. He shouts that the jewel embedded in the beast's forehead is its only weak spot. Hikaru focuses her attack and strikes the jewel directly, killing Inouva. Ferio arrives at the battlefield moments after the beast falls. He looks at the knights' victory and tells them to save Cephiro. Later, Alcyone kneels before Zagato and begs him to kill the Magic Knights herself. Zagato refuses and walks away, leaving Alcyone alone with her frustration.
18The Last Rune-God: Rayearth - the Lord of Fire
Alcyone spies on Zagato as he speaks with Princess Emeraude and begins to doubt his stated reason for holding the princess captive. Mokona leads Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu to an active volcano that houses the final Rune-God. The intense heat forces Umi and Fuu to remain behind while Hikaru enters the shrine alone to face Rayearth, the Rune-God of Fire. Zagato arrives at the volcano and attacks the two defenseless Magic Knights, stripping away their armor and leaving them unconscious. Hikaru returns from her trial to find her friends defeated and confronts Zagato directly. Zagato removes Hikaru's armor as well and prepares a final attack to eliminate all three knights. Lafarga arrives and attempts to strike Zagato, but the priest phases through the sword blows and blasts the swordsman at close range. Hikaru throws herself in front of Lafarga to shield him from another attack, demonstrating her unwillingness to abandon anyone. Rayearth recognizes the strength of Hikaru's heart and awakens, enveloping her in flames that produce new, more elaborate armor. The Rune-God rises from the lava beside Hikaru, and she sends a blast of fire that wounds Zagato's arm, proving he can be harmed. Zagato retreats rather than continue the fight, and the three Magic Knights finally stand together with all three Rune-Gods awakened. Emeraude's voice reaches the knights through their radios, calling them to the place above the sky where she awaits their arrival.
19Showdown! The Magic Knights Versus Zagato
Hikaru,Umi, and Fuu ride their Rune-Gods toward the flying mountain that holds Zagato. The three girls recall their past struggles and victories during the journey. Princess Emeraude sends them a direct message, asking them to grant her wish and save Cephiro. Alcyone discovers Zagato's true motivations and feels betrayed by him. The Magic Knights reach Zagato, who blocks their path inside his own Machine. The girls engage Zagato in combat and suffer injuries during the fight. The battle turns against the Magic Knights as Zagato overpowers them. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu combine their individual powers into a single attack: Red Lightning, Dragon Water, and Green Gale. The combined blast strikes Zagato and kills him. Princess Emeraude witnesses Zagato's death from her prison and screams in horror. The episode ends with Emeraude's anguished cry as the Knights face the consequences of their victory.
