Description
Ascot is a character who first appears as a child but later transforms into a young man, known as Ascot da adulto, in the second arc of Magic Knight Rayearth. His origins lie in his identity as a Palu, a rare individual with the innate ability to summon and communicate with monsters. These creatures, despite their frightening appearances, are not inherently malicious. However, the villagers of his homeland feared them, leading to Ascot being ostracized and driven away. He lived a lonely existence until the high priest Zagato offered him and his monstrous friends a home within his palace in exchange for his loyalty and service.

Initially, Ascot’s personality is shaped by this rejection and loneliness. He appears cynical and prone to mocking others, but this facade masks a deep-seated shyness and a fierce protectiveness for the creatures he considers his only friends. Consumed by bitterness, he follows Zagato's orders without question. In the anime adaptation, his actions have grave consequences, as he uses his summoned monsters to destroy the home of the sage Presea, inadvertently causing her death. His role in the story changes dramatically following a confrontation with the Magic Knights. During this battle, the knight Umi Ryuzaki slaps him and sternly rebukes him for using his friends as weapons of war, causing them to suffer pain on his behalf. This moment serves as a powerful wake-up call, leading to a complete change of heart. Realizing the true meaning of friendship and selfishness, Ascot abandons Zagato and reforms his ways.

Between the first and second story arcs, Ascot undergoes a remarkable and visible development. Using the power of his own will, he transforms his body into that of a tall and handsome young man, now standing 170 cm tall. This physical maturation is driven directly by his feelings for Umi, who inspired his redemption. His personality matures alongside his body, becoming calm, sweet, and gentle toward others. While he retains his ability to summon monsters, he no longer wishes to endanger them. To avoid using his friends as living weapons, he studies new, non-summoning spells under the tutelage of the master mage Clef.

A central motivation for the adult Ascot is his love for Umi. He harbors romantic feelings for her and eventually gathers the courage to confess. In the anime, Umi responds kindly but clarifies that she loves him only as a friend, the same way she loves everyone else in the land of Cephiro. While this rejection saddens him, he accepts her feelings with maturity, demonstrating a resolve to support her regardless of whether his affections are returned. In the manga continuity, the outcome is more open-ended, with the relationship between Umi and Ascot implied to be closer and potentially budding into romance. Throughout the second series, he remains a steadfast ally to the Magic Knights. His key relationships include a sibling-like bond with Caldina, a fellow former servant of Zagato, and a student-mentor dynamic with Clef. Among his notable abilities, his primary power remains summoning magic. The creatures he commands, which he treats as friends, include Atalanta, Pajero, Vigor, Duesy, and Capella. In addition to summoning, his training with Clef grants him access to other spells, allowing him to fight without relying solely on his summoned companions.
