Description
Priscila, known as Presea in the original Japanese version, is the chief artisan of the magical world of Cephiro in the anime Magic Knight Rayearth. She holds the title of Pharle, also written as Fuaru, a word that means Creator, and she is the highest-ranking craftsperson among those who make weapons in Cephiro. She is uniquely able to work with Escudo, the legendary mineral from which the weapons of the Magic Knights must be forged, and she is the only artisan who can shape it into blades that evolve and grow alongside their users. At the request of the sorcerer Clef, she lives in a mansion at the edge of the Forest of Silence together with the small creature Mokona, quietly waiting for the day the legendary Magic Knights appear.

In appearance, Presea is tall and slender, with long wheat-colored hair tied back in a high ponytail, a golden wreath set with a single red jewel framing her face, and warm brown eyes. Her usual working attire is an orange outfit covered by a yellowish armored apron, and when she enters the process of creating weapons she changes into a long white dress. Her method of crafting is not the hammering of an ordinary blacksmith; it is a graceful ceremony of song and dance, powered by willpower. She cannot cast spells in the usual sense, but her unique gift for weapon creation functions as a form of magic in its own right.

Her personality is playful and mischievous. She has a joking and faintly sadistic side, especially toward Mokona, and she delights in imagining elaborate punishments. When the three girls who are chosen as the Magic Knights first stumble into her home and trigger one of her traps, she briefly drifts into a daydream about how she might punish them, only to be distracted when Mokona is found playing with her papers. She has a habit of losing herself in her own imagination and failing to notice what is happening around her. Beneath this scattered and teasing exterior, however, she is a caring, honest, and highly competent woman who takes her duty very seriously.

Presea’s motivations are rooted in a sense of responsibility and quiet devotion. Clef entrusted her with sheltering Mokona and preparing the weapons for the coming Magic Knights, and she accepts this heavy task without complaint for the sake of Cephiro. She also carries a secret, one-sided love for Clef, which she seems to know will never be returned. Her confidence in the three knights, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, grows as they face their trials, and when they bring her the raw Escudo from the legendary fountain of Eterna, she pours her entire heart into forging their personal swords.

In the story, Presea acts as the first major ally of the Magic Knights after their arrival in Cephiro. She sets them on their quest to obtain Escudo and then creates the blades they need to continue their journey and eventually awaken the giant guardians known as Mashin. In the anime, her fate is tragic. While she is completing the weapons, the forces of the summoner Ascot attack her home, and she loses her life in the destruction. Her death weighs heavily on those around her, and in the second season her twin sister Sierra appears, pretending to be Presea to spare the Magic Knights and Ascot, who blames himself for her death, from further pain. Only a few characters, including Clef and Mokona, are aware that the real Presea is gone.

Presea’s defining ability is her mastery of Escudo and her talent for creating weapons that strengthen along with their users, a skill no other artisan in Cephiro can match. Because willpower determines strength in Cephiro, her crafting is sustained by her own determination, which is why the effort of forging the legendary swords drains her so severely. She also demonstrates some practical skill with a blade, as she is able to deal with a monster that intrudes upon her home early in the series. Her legacy endures above all through the swords she made, which remain essential to the Magic Knights throughout their battles.
