Maralise Tartarine

Description
Maralise Tartarine was a highly respected Brazilian voice actress, born in São Paulo in 1944, who built an extensive career spanning over five decades until her passing in 2014. She began her professional activities in the mid-1960s at the studio AIC (Arte Industrial Cinematográfica) in São Paulo. In the early 1970s, she relocated to Rio de Janeiro to continue her work, eventually returning to São Paulo in the 1990s, which established her as one of the few professionals active in dubbing hubs in both cities.

Tartarine became a well-recognized voice in Brazilian animation, particularly for her numerous roles in Japanese anime series. Among her most notable and long-running parts was Shina de Cobra in the enduringly popular series Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco (Saint Seiya), a role she voiced across the main series, OVAs, and films. She was also the voice of Princesa Safire in the classic series A Princesa e o Cavaleiro (Princess Knight) for dubs produced at Televox. Her work in the magical girl genre included voicing Priscila (Presea) in Guerreiras Mágicas de Rayearth (Magic Knight Rayearth) and its sequel, as well as Mimmet in Sailor Moon S. For younger audiences, she voiced Clair, the Gym Leader, in the Pokémon anime. Other anime credits include roles in Dragon Ball GT as an older Pan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Hell Girl, among many others.

Beyond anime, her voice was ubiquitous in western animation and live-action dubbing. She was the voice of Betty Rubble in Os Flintstones nos Anos Dourados and provided the second voice for Olívia Palito (Olive Oyl) in Popeye cartoons during the 1970s. She voiced Gilda in Captain Cavern and the Teen Angels and characters in series like The Get Along Gang. In live-action, she dubbed numerous Hollywood actresses, including Meg Ryan in Top Gun, Kathleen Turner in The Jewel of the Nile, Karen Allen in the Indiana Jones films, and Uma Thurman in Robin Hood. She was also the first voice of Jill Monroe (Farrah Fawcett) in the series As Panteras (Charlie's Angels).

Despite this prolific body of work, her most iconic and beloved role for the Brazilian public was not in a film or series, but as the voice of A Zebrinha, a cheerful animated zebra that announced the results of the popular Loteria Esportiva on the long-running television program Fantástico during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Maralise Tartarine passed away on November 30, 2014, due to complications from a stroke, leaving behind a rich legacy as one of the most beautiful and recognizable voices in Brazilian dubbing.
