Nozomu Sasaki
Description
Nozomu Sasaki is a Japanese voice actor and singer born on January 25, 1967, in Hiroshima, Japan. He began his career after being accepted as a special admissions student into the Japan Narration Acting Institute, a training program affiliated with the Arts Vision agency. His professional debut came in 1986. Over the decades, Sasaki has been affiliated with several agencies, including Arts Vision, 81 Produce, and Aoni Production.
Sasaki's breakthrough role came in 1988 when he voiced the tormented Tetsuo Shima in the landmark animated film Akira. This performance established him as a talent capable of delivering intense and emotionally charged portrayals. He achieved widespread fame and became a leading voice actor of the 1990s primarily through his role as the spirited protagonist Yusuke Urameshi in the long-running and immensely popular television series Yu Yu Hakusho, which aired from 1992 to 1995. His high-pitched, energetic voice during this period became his signature, leading to numerous leading roles in both television and original video animations. He was also a member of the male voice actor unit NG5 in 1989.
His career encompasses a vast range of significant characters across anime, OVAs, films, and video games. He is known for his work in the 1980s and 1990s, including Julian Mintz in Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988), Shin Mouri in Ronin Warriors (1988), Chihaya in Earthian (1989), Kazuya Hasukawa in Here is Greenwood (1991), Eram in The Heroic Legend of Arslan (1991), Ushio Aotsuki in Ushio & Tora (1992), and Guru Clef in Magic Knight Rayearth (1994). He continued to build his filmography with roles in After War Gundam X as Olba Frost (1996), Revolutionary Girl Utena as Ruka Tsuchiya (1997), Weiss Kreuz as Nagi Naoe (1998), and the enigmatic Eriol Hiiragizawa in Cardcaptor Sakura (1998).
Around 1998, Sasaki's voice underwent a noticeable change, deepening from its previously higher register due to years of intensive voice work. This led to a period of adaptation, during which he successfully transitioned to more mature, nuanced, and often antagonist roles. Notable performances during and after this transition include Hajime Sakaguchi in Please Save My Earth (1993), Jin Akutsu in The Prince of Tennis (2002), Gekko Hayate in Naruto (2003), Johann Liebert in Monster (2004), Hiroto Douma in the Fafner series (2004), Yukimaru in Samurai Champloo (2004), Karl Fei-Ong in Blood+ (2005), Mello in Death Note (2006), and Kagehisa Anotsu in Blade of the Immortal (2019). He has also been active in the 2020s, voicing Makoto Kakizaki in Eternal Boys (2022) and Marito in Bucchigiri?! (2024).
Beyond anime, Sasaki has an extensive body of work in video games, dubbing foreign films and television series, and tokusatsu. His notable game roles include Lee Chaolan in the Tekken series, K9999 in The King of Fighters 2001 and 2002, and Cloud Strife in the PlayStation version of Ehrgeiz. His dubbing work includes providing the Japanese voice for actor Brian Austin Green in several projects and for characters in series like SEAL Team and Station Eleven. In tokusatsu, he voiced the protagonist Robotack in Tetsuwan Tantei Robotack (1998) and has made appearances in Super Sentai series such as Mahou Sentai Magiranger.
Sasaki is also a singer with a discography that includes multiple albums and singles released throughout the 1990s. In a remarkable personal achievement, he enrolled in the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Law in 2014 and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2020. He is known to be an avid reader and speaks English, having earned Eiken Grade 1 certification. His lasting contributions to the voice acting industry were recognized in 2024 when he received the Kei Tomiyama Award at the 18th Seiyu Awards.
