Description
Hiroto Dōma, a second-generation Fafner pilot on Tatsumiya Island, enters as a disillusioned student wrestling with feelings of confinement and uncertainty about his future. His intense frustration over the Arcadian Project and perceived limitations of island life erupts when he locks himself in a school studio during a confrontation about post-graduation plans. There, he voices a desperate desire to escape and become a star, lamenting his sense of entrapment "in a cage" and accusing adults of dishonesty regarding the island's reality. The confrontation eases after reassurance that the younger generation embodies the island's hope, leading Hiroto to apologize. Adults later facilitate a music show for him, partially fulfilling his performance dream.

Operating the Fafner Mark Funf as successor to Mamoru Kodate, Hiroto shelters with the Nishio family during the Human Army's occupation, witnessing escalating tensions. He engages in routine activities with peers, including welcoming Tsubaki Minashiro to their class and joining group outings like a beach day. His camaraderie surfaces in interactions with classmates such as Seri Tatekami—who punches him when he tries to touch Tsubaki—and Rina Nishio, humorously contrasting their reactions. Hiroto demonstrates reliability during Festum attacks, directing others to shelter locations.

Later, Hiroto exhibits growing maturity and mentorship toward junior pilots. He entrusts his cherished helmet, a protective item from Mamoru, to Mimika Mikagami before battle, emphasizing the need to pass on symbols of responsibility "while he could." This act highlights his evolution into a supportive senior figure. In combat, he fights alongside peers like Akira Nishio, reflecting on the persistent challenge of understanding the Festum. Post-battle, he shares lighthearted moments such as enjoying Ramune while contemplating newer pilots' burdens. Hiroto also mediates tensions, including when Akira reacts defensively to questions about Maya Toomi's romantic status.

Symbolically, Hiroto appears in other characters' visions during critical junctures. He offers motivational words to Akira Nishio through a psychic "crossing" amid crisis, later appearing in Akira's vision to silently acknowledge his emotional struggles and growth. In Rina Nishio's dream, Hiroto and Akira walk away together, leaving her behind and hinting at unresolved connections or transitions.
