Description
Mello, whose real name is Mihael Keehl, is a central figure in the second half of the story. He is introduced as one of the gifted children raised at Wammy's House, an orphanage in England established to train potential successors to the detective L. From a young age, Mello was constantly ranked second in overall ability to his rival, Near, an experience that forged a deep and painful inferiority complex that defines much of his personality. He is a young man with a slim build, standing 171 centimeters tall, with straight blond hair and sharp, intense eyes. He typically dresses in black leather clothing, giving him a flashy and aggressive appearance. One of his most recognizable traits is his constant consumption of chocolate bars, which serves as a signature habit. Following a violent explosion, he sustains a large scar across his face, adding a harsh new dimension to his looks.

In stark contrast to Near's calm, analytical, and collected demeanor, Mello is driven by intense emotion, fierce competitiveness, and impulsiveness. He hates losing and despises anyone he perceives as superior to himself, with a particular and focused hatred for Near. His primary motivation is not a sense of justice but a desperate need to prove himself. By capturing Kira, the mass-murdering vigilante, Mello aims to surpass Near and claim the title of L’s true successor, declaring his intent to become "the new Number One." He is willing to cross moral and legal lines that others would not, using ruthless and criminal methods to achieve his goals. Despite this, he is not entirely devoid of conscience. He shows regret for the death of his friend Matt and demonstrates a small, fatal act of decency when he gives a kidnapped woman a blanket for modesty. This mixture of ruthlessness and conscience makes him a volatile and unpredictable player in the conflict.

Rejecting the suggestion that he and Near should work together, Mello flees Wammy's House and goes underground. To gain the resources and power needed to hunt for Kira, he joins an American mafia organization, quickly proving his worth by using his genius-level intellect to become its de facto leader. His role in the story is that of an agent of chaos. While Near works through official channels with the SPK, Mello attacks the Kira case from the shadows, using extreme tactics like kidnapping, blackmail, and murder to destabilize his opponent. He is directly responsible for obtaining a Death Note by kidnapping the daughter of the Japanese police director, an act that sets off a chain of violent confrontations. His key relationships are defined by rivalry and utility. His obsessive antagonism toward Near is the engine of his actions, though they maintain a tense, indirect partnership, exchanging crucial information on at least one occasion. He is deeply loyal to his friend and fellow Wammy's House alumnus, Matt, and feels profound guilt when Matt is killed assisting him. He also maintains a secret channel of communication with Halle Lidner, an agent in Near's SPK.

Throughout the story, Mello demonstrates a willingness to evolve his tactics. After his mafia base is destroyed and he is badly scarred, he becomes a more desperate and focused operative, working with only a small team to pressure Kira from all sides. He orchestrates the abduction of Kira's public spokesperson, Kiyomi Takada, as a final, desperate gambit to force a mistake. This action leads directly to his death, as Takada, who had been told his real name, writes it down on a hidden piece of the Death Note. However, his sacrifice is what ultimately wins the war. His kidnapping forced Kira's follower, Teru Mikami, to break his pattern and go to the real Death Note, exposing its location to Near and allowing the final trap to be sprung. Mello’s most notable ability is his exceptionally high intelligence, on par with the world's greatest detectives, combined with an unparalleled power of action. He is a brilliant strategist and a master of improvisation, capable of executing complex, multi-layered plans like the helicopter-and-missile decoy to steal the Death Note. His weakness is his impulsiveness and emotional volatility, which can cloud his otherwise sharp judgment. Nevertheless, his relentless and unpredictable nature proved to be the critical, destabilizing force that Near needed to finally corner Kira.
