Description
Julian Mintz was born on 25 March 782 UC (sources also cite 26 March) in Heinessenpolis. His mother, an Imperial commoner who fled to the Free Planets Alliance, died when he was two. His father, from the prestigious Mintz family descended from Arle Heinessen's followers, died in battle when Julian was eight. He lived with his paternal grandmother. She destroyed photographs of his mother and hid those of his father due to disapproval of their marriage, reflecting aristocratic prejudices akin to Imperial nobility. After his grandmother's death when he was ten, Julian possessed no surviving images of his parents. He learned tea-making skills from his mother (sources also attribute this to his father's hobby).

As a war orphan, he entered the Alliance's welfare program. Vice Admiral Alex Cazerne mediated his adoption by Yang Wen-li. Julian managed household responsibilities for Yang. Despite Yang's wish for him to avoid military life, Julian pursued a military career. He trained under Yang's senior officers, including Olivier Poplin and Walter von Schönkopf, in combat, strategy, and leadership.

His first combat experience came in 798 UC during a training exercise as a Spartanian pilot. He survived the destruction of his carrier, the *Ameretat*. He destroyed three Imperial Walküre fighters and crippled the Imperial cruiser *Lenbach* by targeting its missile launcher. During the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn, he destroyed another Walküre. He deduced Admiral Kempff's strategy against Alliance reinforcements, enabling a successful counterattack. Julian later participated in the relief force that discovered Yang Wen-li's body after Yang's assassination. He personally informed Frederica Greenhill Yang of her husband's death.

At age eighteen, as a sub-lieutenant, he assumed command of the Yang Fleet and became military leader of the newly formed Iserlohn Republic. As commander, he exhibited strategic acumen by refusing to aid Oskar von Reuenthal's rebellion against the Galactic Empire, correctly predicting its failure. He permitted Imperial forces passage through the Iserlohn Corridor. He subsequently defeated numerically superior Imperial fleets at the Eleventh Battle of Iserlohn.

During the Battle of Shiva, he led a boarding party onto Kaiser Reinhard's flagship *Brünhild*. He penetrated the Imperial fleet with only 9,800 undercrewed ships against overwhelming odds. Early on 1 June 801 UC, Julian confronted Reinhard directly. His impassioned appeal for democratic ideals and physical collapse after securing terms prompted Reinhard to agree to a ceasefire and equal negotiations with the Iserlohn Republic. This resulted in the Ba‘alat Starzone gaining autonomy under the peace terms, effectively dissolving the Republic. Julian stood 179.5 cm tall and remained alive as of 801 UC.
