Description
Kazuya Hasukawa is a fifteen-year-old boy who becomes the central figure in the Greenwood dormitory at Ryokuto Academy. He has been raised by his older brother, Kazuhiro, following the death of their parents when they were younger, and initially harbored a strong admiration for him, hoping to follow in his footsteps by attending the same prestigious all-boys school. However, this feeling of worship turns to disillusionment when Kazuhiro marries Sumire, a woman with whom Kazuya had fallen in love, leading him to lose respect for his brother and flee his home to live in the dormitory.
His personality is characterized by a serious, reserved, and often uptight demeanor, which makes him a stark contrast to the eccentric and chaotic environment of Greenwood. He is frequently stressed, a condition that manifests physically in the form of nosebleeds and ulcers, making him somewhat of a hapless figure who seems to attract bad luck. Although he tries to maintain a strait-laced and traditional worldview, he is often pushed to his limits by the pranks and schemes of his peers, occasionally retaliating when he has been pushed too far. Despite his frustrations, he is a fundamentally sincere and capable individual with good academic standing.
Kazuya’s primary motivation at the start of the story is to escape his painful home life, where he must witness his brother and his first love living together as a married couple. His plan for a quiet, studious life at the dormitory is immediately thwarted by the reality of Greenwood, forcing him to navigate a world of bizarre rules and eccentric personalities. Over time, his goal shifts from mere escape to finding his place within this strange community, ultimately growing into a leadership role.
Within the story, Kazuya serves as the straight man or the "only sane man" amidst the dorm’s madness. His arrival at Greenwood is delayed due to a series of unfortunate events, including a car accident, and he joins the semester late, which adds to his initial sense of alienation. He is assigned to room with Shun Kisaragi, a long-haired, pretty student whom he is told is a girl in disguise. This turns out to be an elaborate prank by the dorm's upperclassmen, as Shun is, in fact, a boy, making Kazuya the unwitting subject of a betting pool. He forms a core group with his neighbor, the cheerful but tormenting dorm president Mitsuru Ikeda, and the student body president Shinobu Tezuka, who both delight in teasing him but also serve as his unlikely friends and mentors. His relationship with his brother is also central, as Kazuhiro works as the school nurse, a "feminine" career choice that further disappoints Kazuya and subjects him to constant, unavoidable embarrassment.
Kazuya shows significant development throughout the series. While initially defined by his bitterness and immaturity, he gradually earns the respect of his peers. He eventually succeeds Mitsuru as the head of Greenwood dormitory, a sign of his growing responsibility and acceptance. He begins to overcome his unrequited feelings for Sumire, particularly after she becomes pregnant, leading him to shed "bloody tears" and finally reconcile with his brother. He eventually finds a second love with a delinquent girl named Miya Igarashi, earning a happy and more mature ending to his story.
In terms of notable abilities, Kazuya is exceptionally fast on his feet, capable of running 100 meters in 11 seconds. While he does not possess significant physical strength, this speed makes him a "weak, but skilled" individual who can outrun almost anyone. This talent, combined with his academic diligence, forms the core of his practical skills within the series.
