Ted Lewis
Description
Ted Lewis is an American voice actor known for his extensive work in English-language dubs of anime series and films. Born on October 18, 1969, he is also credited professionally under the name Ed Paul. His career in the entertainment industry began in 1990, with his debut role as Etoh in the dub of the fantasy OVA Record of Lodoss War. Since then, he has lent his voice to a wide array of characters across more than seventy productions, often working with studios such as 4K Media Inc., Central Park Media, TAJ Productions, DuArt Film and Video, and NYAV Post.
Lewis is perhaps best recognized for his roles in long-running and internationally popular anime series. He is well-known as the voice of the self-centered King Dedede and his sniveling assistant Escargoon in the Nintendo-based anime Kirby: Right Back At Ya!. He has a long and prominent history with the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, where he is celebrated for voicing Ryo Bakura, as well as his dark persona Yami Bakura and the Thief King Bakura, in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. He continued his association with the franchise by taking on the role of the rival character Jack Atlas in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, later reprising the part in Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. His voice is also familiar to fans of the Pokémon anime, where he has performed multiple roles over the years, including the villainous Team Rocket leader Giovanni, the aspiring Pokémon watcher Tracey Sketchit, and James for the first eight episodes.
Beyond these signature roles, Lewis has built a diverse filmography that spans numerous genres and titles from the 1990s to the present. His work includes the protagonist Tomoru Shindo, who merges with the titular alien warrior in the sci-fi OVA Detonator Orgun. He played Eiji Shinjo in the fighting game adaptation Battle Arena Toshinden and Isato Kaiza, the hero of the super-powered tournament OVA Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. In a departure from action-oriented roles, he portrayed the gentle William Jones, a love interest from a higher social class, in the historical romance series Emma: A Victorian Romance and its second season. He also took on horror and supernatural roles, such as Koichi, a high school boy possessed by a god to fight ancient evils in Guardian of Darkness, and the upperclassman Kazuya Hasukawa in the comedic high school story Here Is Greenwood.
In addition to his voice acting, Lewis is a founding member of the off-Broadway theater group Bedlam, which is known for its reinterpretations of classic works, particularly the plays of William Shakespeare. His contributions to anime voice acting have been recognized with awards; in 2018, he won two Behind the Voice Actors Awards for Best Vocal Ensemble in an Anime Feature Film/Special for his work as Bakura in the film Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions, with one of the awards being a People's Choice honor.
