OVA
Description
Koichi is a teenage boy and the main protagonist of the anime Guardian of Darkness. He is seventeen years old and a high school student, known as a popular figure at his school and described as the green-haired darling of the school. He is the childhood friend of Terumi Amano, a girl who secretly loves him, though Koichi remains oblivious to her feelings. Koichi is revealed to be a descendant of Susa, the first human to serve as a host for the war god Susanoo, also called Takegami. When three ancient dragons awaken from their centuries‑long slumber to threaten humanity, the god Susanoo approaches Koichi and asks to possess his body in order to fight the dragons. Koichi reluctantly agrees, becoming the new host for the warrior god.
In terms of personality, Koichi initially appears as a typical teenager who is reluctant to take on the burden of a chosen hero. He is caring and protective, especially toward Terumi, and his desire to save her from the dragons’ influence drives many of his actions. As the story unfolds, he struggles with the prophesied cost of defeating the dragons: the host of Susanoo must die when the final dragon is killed. This leaves Koichi in a difficult position, forcing him to find a way to fulfill his role while also trying to preserve his own life and protect Terumi.
Koichi’s primary role in the story is to serve as the vessel for Takegami and to battle the three dragon spirits: the Dragon of the Earth, the Dragon of the Heavens, and the Dragon God Hiruko. He is guided by the priestess Sayoko Matsuura, who holds the Matsuura Prophecy and explains the long‑running war between the gods. Koichi also develops a relationship with Susanoo, the god residing within him, and gradually learns to harness the god’s powers more effectively.
Throughout the OVA, Koichi undergoes development from a hesitant individual into a more determined fighter. He comes to accept his destiny and becomes willing to sacrifice himself if necessary to save others, especially Terumi. His abilities stem from his connection to Takegami, granting him superhuman strength and the capacity to combat the dragons. By the end of the series, he gains greater control over these powers and uses them to confront the final threat.
Key relationships in Koichi’s life include his friendship with Terumi, which is central to the plot as his protective feelings for her shape his choices. He also interacts with his cousin Satsuki, a schoolmate named Motoko who tries to get close to him, and the monk Jiunbo. His relationship with Susanoo is one of mutual necessity, though the god’s presence within him remains a constant challenge. Overall, Koichi is the reluctant hero of Guardian of Darkness, whose journey explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and the struggle between personal desire and the greater good.
