Description
Leona is a central character in the Resurrection arc of the anime Phoenix, which is set in the year 2482. Her story begins when she dies in a traffic accident and is brought back to life by Dr. Nielsen in a groundbreaking experimental procedure. After her revival, Leona’s perception of the world changes dramatically: she begins to see other human beings as ugly, inorganic substances, while an emotionless clerical robot named Chihiro appears to her as a beautiful woman. This altered perception drives her to fall deeply in love with Chihiro, and the two eventually run away together in an attempt to marry. During their escape, they become involved with black marketers who smuggle space immigrants. Leona’s role in the narrative is central; she is both a test subject for the limits of resurrection and a figure whose subjective vision challenges the nature of reality and love. Her key relationships include Dr. Nielsen, the scientist responsible for her revival; Chihiro, the robot who begins to develop feelings in response to Leona’s affection; and Doc Weekday, a physician working with the black marketers. After Leona’s eventual death, Doc Weekday combines her mind with Chihiro’s to create Robita, a robot that possesses genuine emotions. Through this process, Leona’s character undergoes a profound transformation from an ordinary person to someone whose subjective perception redefines her connections with others, and ultimately contributes to the birth of a new form of life. She does not possess any supernatural abilities; her significance lies in her altered perception and her role as a pioneer in the revival of the dead within the story’s science‑fiction setting.
