Description
Kotaro Takamiya is the older brother of the protagonist Teppei Takamiya. He was born and raised on Kamui Island, living with his brother and uncle after the early death of their parents. From a young age, he displayed extraordinary talent in the sciences and became known as a child prodigy in the academic world. He later traveled to Germany to study robotics and artificial intelligence, eventually becoming a world‑renowned engineer specializing in robotic biology. By the age of sixteen, he had already earned a professorship and published a groundbreaking thesis on AI robotics technology.

Kotaro is characterized by his deep sense of responsibility and loyalty, especially toward his younger brother. His exceptional intellect is paired with a logical and analytical mind, which he relies on even under pressure. However, he also exhibits signs of anxiety and insecurity, likely stemming from the immense weight of his work and the perilous situation he is forced into. His key motivation throughout the story is his desire to protect his brother and to use his knowledge for the greater good, even when he is coerced into serving the antagonist Machine Empire.

His role in the story is primarily that of the catalyst: his kidnapping by the Empire at a robotics convention in Mechatopia sets the entire plot in motion. Taken to the Empire’s stronghold known as the Area, he is compelled to assist Major Aramis in solving the problem of the uncontrollable ultimate B’t Raphael. While he is not a combatant, his expertise in B’t technology and AI makes him a vital asset to the Empire’s projects and, indirectly, a key figure in the resolution of the central conflict. His presence also serves as the emotional goal for Teppei’s quest, with Teppei’s determination to rescue him driving the narrative forward.

The most important relationship in Kotaro’s life is with his brother Teppei. Their bond is a source of strength for both characters: Kotaro’s captivity fuels Teppei’s resolve, and Kotaro’s own thoughts often return to his brother’s safety. He also develops a complex dynamic with Major Aramis, the officer who oversees his work, as well as other members of the Machine Empire who both rely on and distrust his genius.

Kotaro’s personal development is more subtle than that of other characters, but he gradually moves from a passive captive who reluctantly aids the Empire to a more active agent who uses his intelligence to subvert its most destructive plans. His inherent kindness and moral compass remain intact despite the coercion he endures.

His most notable ability is his profound intellect, particularly in the fields of robotic biology and artificial intelligence. He possesses an advanced understanding of B’t construction, including the BreakHeart system that powers these machines. This knowledge allows him to analyze and theorize about the nature of the most powerful B’ts, making him indispensable to both the Empire and those who oppose it.
