Description
Eriol Hiragizawa is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Cardcaptor Sakura, who appears as a central figure in the events following the initial capture of the Clow Cards. He is introduced as a transfer student from England who joins Sakura Kinomoto's class at Tomoeda Elementary School. Eriol's fundamental identity is that of one of the two reincarnated beings who together form the soul of the great sorcerer Clow Reed. While Sakura's father, Fujitaka Kinomoto, inherited Clow Reed's physical body and gentle disposition, Eriol inherited all of his magical power and his memories. This makes him one of the most powerful living magicians in the world. To achieve his goals, Eriol uses his magic to maintain the appearance of a child the same age as Sakura, despite having been alive for much longer.

In terms of personality, Eriol presents a calm, polite, and often mysterious exterior. He is frequently seen wearing glasses and a gentle, knowing smile, which gives him an air of refinement and wisdom far beyond his apparent years. He is incredibly intelligent, excels in academics and sports, and is even skilled in cooking and household chores. While he is fundamentally a kind and caring person, he also possesses a mischievous and playful side. He enjoys creating elaborate magical situations and can be somewhat cryptic, often speaking in riddles. He has a tendency to go along with and even encourage the tall tales told by his classmate Takashi Yamazaki. Eriol himself reflects that his life was not particularly happy due to his ability to foresee almost everything, a burden he shares with his predecessor, Clow Reed. He considers his own nature to be somewhat twisted, yet others, like Sakura and her friend Tomoyo Daidouji, consistently recognize his inherent gentleness.

Eriol's primary motivation in the story is to guide Sakura in transforming the Clow Cards into a new set of cards called Sakura Cards. The original Clow Cards were losing their power because they were created with the magic of Clow Reed, which was fading from the world. To prevent them from becoming useless, a new master needed to infuse them with their own energy. To create a pressing need for this transformation, Eriol deliberately engineers a series of strange and often dangerous magical incidents, acting as a seemingly antagonistic force. His ultimate personal goal, however, is to rid himself of the immense power and foresight that have made his life burdensome. After Sakura successfully changes all the cards, he asks for her help in splitting his own magic in half, giving the other portion to Fujitaka Kinomoto. This act allows him to finally cease being the world's most powerful sorcerer.

Eriol's role in the story is that of a mentor and a catalyst for Sakura's growth as a magician. He is the architect of the trials that push her to develop her own unique power. Although his methods create suspicion among Sakura's guardians, Cerberus and Yue, and jealousy in her friend Syaoran Li, his intentions are ultimately benevolent. He tests Sakura not to defeat her but to make her stronger and to ensure the legacy of the cards is secured. In the subsequent Clear Card arc, after returning to live in England with his partner Kaho Mizuki, he continues to support Sakura from afar. He senses a new and powerful magical threat and works to investigate it, providing crucial information and magical assistance to Sakura and her friends when they face the magician Yuna D. Kaito.

Key relationships define Eriol's interactions with other characters. He shares a unique bond with Fujitaka Kinomoto, as they are two halves of the same original soul. He feels a strong, paternal-like care for Sakura, whom he watches over with great tenderness. According to Tomoyo, he looks at Sakura as if she were someone extremely precious to him. His relationship with Syaoran Li is initially tense, as Syaoran is suspicious of Eriol's true motives and jealous of his easy friendship with Sakura. However, Eriol is never hostile in return and even offers Syaoran quiet advice and support, revealing that he is aware of Syaoran's true feelings. His two constant companions are Spinel Sun and Ruby Moon, magical beings he created himself to serve as his guardians, mirroring the roles of Cerberus and Yue for Clow Reed. Finally, his most intimate relationship is with Kaho Mizuki, who was once a teacher at Tomoeda Elementary. They confirm their feelings for each other, and she returns to England with him to live together.

Throughout his appearance, Eriol undergoes significant development. He begins as a mysterious and somewhat unsettling figure whose true intentions are hidden. His arc concludes with him casting off the heavy burden of his power and foresight, becoming a more ordinary person. By choosing to live his own life with Kaho, he effectively ends his role as a direct agent of Clow Reed's will and steps out from the shadow of his former self. This is his personal liberation.

Eriol possesses a vast array of notable abilities. He has immense magical power, including the ability to levitate, animate inanimate objects, create powerful barriers, and cast complex spells affecting large areas, such as the one that plunged all of Tomoeda into darkness and put its citizens to sleep. He has a strong affinity for premonitions and can see into the future, though he loses this ability after giving away half his power. Interestingly, as he is a reincarnation of the creator, most magic from the moon, including that of Yue, has no effect on him. He is also a creator of magical systems, having designed Spinel Sun and Ruby Moon. His magical focus is a staff that can be concealed in a key form. Eriol's magic circle, derived from Clow's, combines the symbols of both the sun and the moon. Even after his power is halved, he remains a formidable magician capable of holding his own against powerful adversaries and providing critical support from a great distance.
