Description
Asagi is introduced as the captain of Gunjou, the personal guard of the Blue King, which is composed of handsome young men. He initially serves the Blue King, but this role is a deception that masks his true identity and agenda. Asagi is, in fact, a secret child of the Emperor, King Ukon, and is the legitimate heir to the Blue Kingdom, making him the true Blue King. On the orders of the White King, he infiltrates the army of Tatara, the rebel leader, with a cunning plan to sow discord and manipulate the key players of the rebellion, particularly aiming to turn Tatara and the Red King against one another.

Asagi possesses a contrary and self-centered personality, openly disliking physical labor and often appearing languid. Despite his disdain for exertion, he is highly skilled with a sword, though his physical constitution is notably weak and sickly. This frailty is a core aspect of his character; it is implied to be the result of genetic problems stemming from incest, as he is rumored to be the child of Ginko, the White King, and her own father, Emperor Ukon. His poor health fuels a deep-seated inferiority complex, particularly in contrast to his half-brother, the powerful Red King Shuri. A pivotal moment in his childhood, when Shuri carelessly destroyed a treasured peach given to him by his mother Ginko, served as the seed for his deep-seated hatred and rivalry towards Shuri. This resentment later expands to encompass a desire to best his brother in all arenas, including leadership, military strategy, and even for the affection and approval of their mother, Ginko.

Asagi's role in the story is that of a complex antagonist and a master manipulator. He excels at psychological warfare, working from the shadows to destabilize both the Red King's forces and Tatara's rebellion, aiming to make them destroy each other for his own benefit. For a significant period, he operates under a facade, even gaining the trust of Sarasa, who leads the rebellion as Tatara, before his true intentions are revealed. One of his most notable schemes involves faking the Blue King's ritual sacrifice to a beast, which is later exposed as a mechanical device operated by Asagi himself, an act that turns the public against the false king.

His key relationships are fraught with manipulation and hidden agendas. His connection to Shuri is defined by envy and a desire for revenge. His relationship with Ginko is deeply complex; her rare affection was all he had as a child, and her approval remains a powerful, unfulfilled need that drives his actions. As a strategist, he is shown to be highly intelligent and effective, capable of dividing the rebel forces and delaying their progress. However, his character is not without nuance. Despite his self-serving nature, prolonged exposure to Sarasa's unwavering determination and integrity begins to subtly affect him, gradually shifting his perspective despite his best efforts to remain detached and villainous. His capabilities include masterful swordsmanship, strategic cunning, and a talent for illusion and deception, as demonstrated by his ability to impersonate a guard and operate complex machinery behind the scenes of the Blue King's court.
