Description
Mackie Stingray is the younger brother of Sylia Stingray and the only remaining family she has. He is the son of Dr. Katsuhito Stingray, the scientist who originally developed the boomer technology. After his father was killed in an explosion orchestrated by the Genom Corporation, Mackie was orphaned and subsequently came to live with and assist his sister.
In the original Bubblegum Crisis OVA series, Mackie serves as a vital non-combat ally to the Knight Sabers, the all-female mercenary team led by Sylia. His primary role is that of a mechanic and technical support specialist. He works alongside Dr. Raven, a friend of Sylia, to maintain the team's advanced equipment. Mackie handles most of the day-to-day maintenance and repairs of the hardsuits, the powered exoskeletons used by the Knight Sabers in combat. He is also responsible for the upkeep of Priss's motorcycle, which frequently requires repairs due to the demanding nature of her driving and combat situations. Beyond his workshop duties, Mackie provides logistical support by driving a large truck that transports the Knight Sabers and their vehicles to mission sites. Although he is not a frontline fighter, Mackie is capable of piloting an armored suit or mecha himself when a mission requires his direct involvement.
Mackie is portrayed as a highly skilled whiz kid with computers and technology, displaying an intuitive understanding of complex mechanical and electronic systems. In the original series, his personality is marked by an adolescent and somewhat perverted sense of humor, often attempting to catch glimpses of the female Knight Sabers in various states of undress, including his own sister. This behavior is portrayed as a recurring comedic element.
In the reboot series Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, the character is reimagined with significant changes. Mackie is initially introduced as Sylia's younger brother, but he is later revealed to be something far more complex. He is actually a prototype boomer created by Dr. Katsuhito Stingray as part of his experiments in artificial life. Mackie is a male doppelganger of Sylia, constructed with a brain modeled after her own neural functions. He is neither fully human nor a standard boomer, but a prototype that was considered too human and ultimately deemed a failure. This revelation recontextualizes his entire existence and his relationship with Sylia.
In the Tokyo 2040 continuity, Mackie is portrayed as naive, curious, awkward, and very sweet-natured. He has a gentle and easy-going demeanor and does not act like a machine. He retains a passionate love for computers and machinery, often claiming that machines can sense when they have been put together correctly. In this version, he develops romantic feelings for Nene Romanova, the Knight Sabers' hacker and communications specialist. His role in the team remains that of an assistant and mechanic, working alongside lead mechanic Nigel Kirkland to build and repair the hardsuits. Later in the series, Mackie malfunctions and is presumed dead due to the influence of Galatea, a powerful boomer entity. However, he is ultimately revived after Galatea's defeat, reconciling with Sylia and the others.
Across both versions of the story, Mackie Stingray is defined by his close familial bond with Sylia, his technical genius, and his supportive role as the behind-the-scenes operator who keeps the Knight Sabers' equipment functional. His character development reaches its peak in Tokyo 2040, where his true nature as a prototype boomer forces him and those around him to confront questions of identity, humanity, and what it means to be a person.
