OVA
Description
Igarashi Toshi is a central human character in the story of Compiler. He is a Japanese high school student distinguished by his black hair and blue eyes, living an ordinary life until the arrival of two beings from another dimension changes everything.
In terms of personality, Toshi is portrayed as notably shy, especially in his interactions with girls. This timidity is taken to a comedic extreme, as he is known to suffer sudden nosebleeds when a scantily clad woman hugs him. Despite this acute shyness, he does have a girlfriend, with whom he shares a platonic relationship. His personal desires and motivations are largely grounded in a simple, peaceful existence, and he does not seek adventure or conflict.
The primary driver of Toshi's role in the narrative is his relationship with Assembler, one of the extradimensional "Domni-Matrixes" sent to conquer Earth. A deep, romantic bond forms between him and Assembler, which serves as the crucial catalyst for her decision to abandon her destructive mission. While his older brother, Nachi Igarashi, shares a similar tension with the other being named Compiler, Toshi's connection with Assembler is the central emotional axis for his character. This relationship grows over the course of the story, though neither Toshi nor Assembler are initially able to admit their true feelings for one another outright.
Toshi's function in the story is not that of a fighter or hero. He possesses no combat abilities, superhuman powers, or special skills. His significance is entirely narrative and relational; his ordinary humanity provides a direct contrast to the extraordinary nature of Assembler and Compiler, and his emotional bond with Assembler is the very reason she chooses to live peacefully on Earth as opposed to helping conquer it. The story, particularly in its second OVA episode, focuses significantly on his daily interactions and the development of his relationship with Assembler rather than placing him in action-oriented scenarios. Through his connection with her, Toshi becomes entwined in the subsequent conflicts when the council of the extradimensional world sends entities like Bios and Directory to deal with the defectors and continue the invasion plan. In this way, Toshi Igarashi represents the ordinary human life that the extradimensional visitors come to value, making him a key figure in the story's central theme of finding connection and choosing a new path.
