TV-Series
Description
Clef, also known as the Master Mage or Guru Clef, is the most powerful magician in the land of Cephiro. Despite his youthful appearance, which resembles that of a young boy, he is in fact 745 years old. He serves as the primary consultant to the Pillar and the court, holding a position of immense authority and wisdom that comes from centuries of experience.

His personality is a blend of a strict, short-tempered demeanor and a deeply compassionate heart. While he can project the image of a fussy, serious, and dignified advisor, his true motivations are rooted in a gentle and protective nature, especially concerning the well-being of the people of Cephiro. He is a man of few words, preferring to be succinct and direct, and he values silence and careful planning over reckless action. He harbors a significant amount of guilt, feeling responsible for the pain and hardship the Magic Knights endured because he concealed the full truth of their mission from them.

In the first series, Clef is tasked by the Pillar, Princess Emeraude, to guide the summoned Magic Knights. He is the one who awakens their latent magical powers and provides them with crucial tools and knowledge. However, shortly after their first meeting, he is turned to stone by the High Priest Zagato, one of his former pupils, rendering him unable to physically assist the knights for much of their journey. Even in this petrified state, he continues to aid them telepathically, teaching Umi and Fuu advanced magic.

In Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Clef plays a more active role. He works tirelessly to guard the crumbling palace of Cephiro against invasions from neighboring worlds, surrounding it with a powerful barrier. He takes on the role of a mentor and strategist, supporting the returned Magic Knights as they face new and greater threats. He is shown to be extremely dedicated to protecting the refugees and the very structure of Cephiro, pushing himself to the point of collapse by expending vast amounts of his life force to maintain the palace's defenses. It is in this season that his deep, introspective nature comes to the forefront, as he begins to voice serious doubts about the fundamental system of the Pillar itself, a system that demands the ruler sacrifice their personal happiness for the sake of the land.

Clef's motivations are driven by his sense of duty and his lingering regret. He feels a profound responsibility to correct the mistakes of the past, which is why he apologizes to the Magic Knights upon their return and encourages them to fight for themselves and to return home, rather than fighting for Cephiro. His ultimate goal aligns with the knights' new purpose: to find a way to save Cephiro without repeating the tragedy that befell Emeraude and Zagato.

His relationships are central to his character. He is the former teacher of several key figures, including the tragic Zagato, the wandering swordsman Lantis (Zagato's younger brother), and the ambitious sorceress Alcyone. His past with them is a source of personal pain and conflict. He shares a close, trusting bond with Presea, the Master Weaponsmith, who harbors unrequited romantic feelings for him. He also develops a unique bond with the Magic Knights, particularly Umi, with whom he shares a hinted-at romantic subplot in the anime adaptation. He later takes the young monster summoner Ascot under his wing as a student.

As a master of magic for over seven centuries, his abilities are vast and varied. He specializes in multiple schools of magic, including summoning, attack, and defensive spells. He carries a large staff, which houses his summoned magical creature, Fuhla. Among his known spells are Accept, which awakens the magical powers in others; Clefto, which summons a magical creature to fight for him; Cresta, which creates a powerful magical barrier to nullify enemy attacks; and Thunders, which calls down a powerful bolt of lightning to strike foes. He demonstrates the immense power and risk of his magic in the second season, nearly losing his life when he uses a powerful spell to transport the Magic Knights back from a dangerous dimension.
