Description
Master Clef is the most powerful mage in Cephiro, holding the title of Supreme Mage in the anime or Guru in the manga. Despite appearing as a young boy with short white hair and blue eyes, he is well over 745 years old and has willed himself to maintain this youthful form. Wearing an elaborate priestly robe adorned with blue magic jewels and a horned tiara, he carries a magical staff that he uses to channel his abilities.

His personality is marked by a sharp, pragmatic, and at times impatient demeanor. He values silence and is easily irritated by noise, occasionally waving his staff in frustration when pestered. While initially short-tempered and blunt in his interactions with the three girls, especially Umi Ryuuzaki, he possesses a fundamentally good and kind nature. He is deeply loyal to Cephiro and its ruler, though he is troubled by the burden of the Pillar system and the sacrifices it demands, a concern he voices more directly in the manga.

Clef is driven by a solemn sense of duty to Cephiro. Princess Emeraude appointed him to guide the Legendary Magic Knights, and he accepted this charge knowing the tragic truth of their mission. He appears pragmatic and detached when discussing the legend, but internally he feels profound guilt for guiding Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu toward their foreordained destiny, a burden he carries into the second season. He protects the land even at the cost of his own life.

In the story, Clef is the first person the Magic Knights meet upon being summoned to Cephiro. He saves them from their crashing fall and explains the basic nature of their quest. However, he is ambushed by Alcyone and petrified by High Priest Zagato before he can reveal the full truth. Even turned to stone, Clef continues to guide the girls from a distance by communicating through the creature Mokona. In the anime, after being freed, he helps guard the palace from foreign invasions. In the manga, he remains active throughout, never being turned to stone, and in the second arc he leads Cephiro's defense until a new Pillar can be chosen.

He has a number of key relationships. He served as Princess Emeraude's personal attendant and closest advisor when she became the Pillar, and his loyalty to her remains absolute even though he speaks of her in formal, distant terms. Clef personally taught magic to Zagato, Lantis, Alcyone, and Emeraude herself. He also appointed Lantis as captain of the guard and Zagato as high priest. With the Magic Knights, he acts as their mentor and guide, developing a particularly good rapport with Hikaru Shidou, while Umi's annoyance at being called a squirt becomes a running dynamic in the anime. The anime also suggests unrequited affection from both Umi and the craftswoman Presea, though Clef does not reciprocate or seem aware of these feelings.

His development centers on his role as a reluctant bearer of painful truths. He understands the legend must happen to save Cephiro but struggles with his part in it. In the second season, he remains unable to forgive himself for not revealing the true purpose of the Magic Knights from the start. He questions the legitimacy of the Pillar system and is deeply relieved when Hikaru eventually chooses to end it, reshaping Cephiro's fate.

As a sorcerer, Clef is acknowledged as the most powerful magic user in Cephiro. His abilities include teaching magic and granting magical power to those with potential, providing the Magic Knights with their self-growing armor, and performing teleportation. His known spells include Kakuen Boujo (a defensive barrier), Inazuma Shourai (lightning generation), Seijyuu Raikai (returning summoned beasts to their realm), and Seijyuu Shoukan (summoning spirit beasts). He also possesses a magic ring capable of opening the Pillar's chamber. In the second series, he almost sacrificed his life casting a spell strong enough to forcibly retrieve the Magic Knights from the control of Lady Debonair and Innova.
