Description
Innova is an antagonist who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Magic Knight Rayearth. This character does not appear in the original manga or subsequent OVA series. The name is derived from the Honda Ascot Innova, a line of motor vehicles.
Innova was originally a holy beast, a magical lightning elemental, kept as a beloved pet by Princess Emeraude of Cephiro. As a sign of her affection for the High Priest Zagato, Emeraude gave Innova to him. Deeply moved by the gesture, Zagato used his magic to transform the beast into a human form, making Innova his most trusted confidant and second-in-command. Because Zagato gave him this human shape, Innova believes his life belongs to his master and serves him with absolute devotion.
In this human guise, Innova has a masculine appearance with white hair, yellow eyes, and distinct pointed elf-like ears. True to his origins as a lightning elemental, his magical abilities revolve around summoning and controlling powerful lightning strikes to attack his opponents. He is widely regarded as the most powerful of all of Zagato's minions. His primary weakness is the gem embedded in his forehead, which remains a vulnerable point whether he is in human or beast form.
Innova's personality is defined by unwavering loyalty. He serves Zagato not out of fear or manipulation, but out of genuine gratitude and dedication. Unlike other subordinates who are treated as disposable pawns, Innova holds a special place in Zagato's regard. He is composed, intelligent, and calculating, capable of strategic deception to achieve his goals. Innova is also one of the few characters who fully understands the tragic truth: he knows that Zagato and Princess Emeraude genuinely love each other, and thus comprehends the complex reasons behind Zagato's rebellion against the Pillar system.
Innova serves as a recurring obstacle for the three Magic Knights. In his first major confrontation, he uses his cunning to deceive the group. He disguises himself as an injured young woman named Sera to exploit the emotions of Fuu and her ally Ferio, leading them into a trap that nearly kills Ferio. During the ensuing battle, Innova overwhelms the Magic Knights until their first Rune God, Windam, awakens and forces his retreat.
Following this defeat, Innova makes a significant request. He asks Zagato to return him to his original beast form, understanding that this transformation will be permanent and he will never be able to become human again. Zagato initially refuses but eventually grants the request out of respect for his loyal servant. In this true form, Innova resembles a giant wolf-like creature with two tendrils streaming from its head, and his power increases dramatically.
In his final battle, Innova nearly annihilates the Magic Knights with his immense power. However, Ferio, who is revealed to be Princess Emeraude's younger brother, communicates a crucial piece of information to Hikaru: the jewel on Innova's forehead is his weak point. Hikaru strikes the jewel, destroying it and killing Innova. Even as he dies, Innova remains loyal to the end, calling out Zagato's name with his final breath. His death is a genuinely sorrowful moment, mourned by both Zagato and Princess Emeraude, who feel the loss of a faithful companion deeply.
