Tesshō Genda

Description
Tesshō Genda is a highly esteemed Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator, celebrated for his powerful, resonant voice and a prolific career spanning over five decades. Born Mitsuo Yokoi on May 20, 1948, he is affiliated with the talent management firm 81 Produce. Genda is distinguished as one of Japan's most prolific and revered voice actors, being one of the few with over 600 anime credits to his name.

Genda's deep and commanding vocal quality has made him the definitive choice for larger-than-life, heroic, and often powerful characters, a niche he has occupied since his debut in the 1970s. His career foundation includes roles in seminal series such as Daijirou Gou in Chōdenji Machine Voltes V and Masami Iwaki in Dokaben.

He is perhaps best known globally as the long-standing Japanese voice of Optimus Prime (originally named Convoy) in the Transformers franchise, a role he has reprised for numerous series, films, and the live-action movie dubs for decades. Another signature role is the imposing Umibōzu in the City Hunter series and its various films. His filmography also includes the roles of the Younger Toguro in YuYu Hakusho, Kurama (the Nine-Tailed Fox) in Naruto, Kaido in One Piece, Rei in Urusei Yatsura, Suppaman in Dr. Slump, Action Kamen in Crayon Shin-chan, and Taurus Aldebaran in Saint Seiya. He also voiced the character Popuko in one iteration of the Pop Team Epic anime.

Beyond anime, Genda is a dominant force in the field of dubbing foreign films and series. He is the official Japanese dubbing voice for Arnold Schwarzenegger and has also regularly provided voices for Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Dan Aykroyd, and Laurence Fishburne. His dubbing roles are iconic, including Batman in various animated series and films, Kratos in the God of War video game series, and Tigger in Winnie the Pooh media. A unique personal tidbit from his early career is his background in ballet, which earned him the nickname "Pirouette Genda".

In recognition of his outstanding contributions and long-standing career in the voice acting industry, Tesshō Genda was honored with a Merit Award at the 4th Seiyu Awards in February 2010. His legacy is defined by his unmistakable voice and the countless iconic characters he has brought to life across anime, animation, and video games.
