Description
Joyrock is the primary antagonist in the anime film Slayers The Motion Picture. He is a mazoku, a type of demon or monster, and is described as being of low ranking within the hierarchy of such beings. Despite this classification, he proves to be a formidable threat due to a specific and significant event in his past.

In terms of background, Joyrock was responsible for a devastating attack on Mipross Island, where he slaughtered the community of elves that lived there. This act of massacre was not merely destructive but also strategic, as he absorbed the power and life force of his elven victims. By the time the story's heroines visit the island, centuries later, Joyrock has grown immensely powerful from this absorbed energy, making him far stronger than a typical low-ranking demon.

Joyrock possesses notable abilities that reflect his cunning and power. He is capable of changing his form at will, first appearing in a small, unassuming frog-like shape. When he chooses to reveal his true might, he transforms into a much larger humanoid figure that still retains reptilian features, giving him a monstrous and intimidating appearance. His magical power is considerable; after growing strong on the elves' life force, he becomes impervious to even Lina Inverse's most destructive spell, the Dragon Slave, demonstrating a level of resilience that forces the heroes to seek an unconventional solution.

His role in the story is that of a hidden evil manipulating events from the shadows. He is the root cause of the troubles on Mipross Island, and his growing power represents a dire threat that cannot be resolved through a direct confrontation in the present timeline. This circumstance defines his function within the plot, as the protagonists must alter history to stop him. Personality-wise, he exhibits a sense of menace typical for a demonic figure, and he is known for having a distinctive and colossal maniacal laugh, which adds to his character as a flamboyant villain. Some interpretations find his goals to be relatively straightforward for a film antagonist, focusing primarily on power acquisition and destruction.

The key to defeating Joyrock lies in his past. The elderly mage Rowdy Gabriev, who had a personal connection to the elves Joyrock murdered, had spent a long time seeking a way to undo the massacre. This pursuit culminates in a time-travel spell that sends Lina Inverse into the past to confront Joyrock before he can slaughter the elves and absorb their power. Stripped of the power boost he would have gained, Joyrock is rendered vulnerable. In this earlier time, Lina, now capable of defeating him, joins forces with a younger Rowdy Gabriev. Using his weapon, the Sword of Light, they successfully slay the demon, erasing his future reign of terror from existence. This resolution shows that his development as a character is tied directly to the alteration of the timeline; his defeat is not a last-minute battle but a rewriting of history that prevents his rise to power in the first place.
