Tristan MacAvery
Description
Tristan MacAvery is an American voice actor known for his work in English-language dubs of anime series and films during the 1990s, particularly for ADV Films. He was born on August 16, 1958, in Petersburg, Virginia. Before entering voice acting, MacAvery had a background in writing and performance, starting with a radio commercial in Austin, Texas, in 1985. He later became involved with a radio drama troupe at the University of California at Davis. His entry into anime voice work came in 1995 through a connection with fellow voice actor Tiffany Grant, which led to opportunities with ADV Films in Houston.
MacAvery is perhaps best recognized for his portrayal of Gendo Ikari, the complex and stoic commander of NERV, in the English adaptation of the influential series Neon Genesis Evangelinon. He reprised this role for the films Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. Another of his significant roles was Vector, the powerful and calculating businessman in the original English dub of the Battle Angel OVA. In a notable departure from these serious characters, MacAvery voiced Pipi in the comedy series Rei Rei, a role he described as the most bawdy and hysterical fun he had with any character.
Beyond acting, MacAvery contributed extensively to anime production as a writer and director. His directing and script adaptation credits include series such as Ushio & Tora, Princess Minerva, Dark Warrior, Panzer Dragoon, and the first four episodes of Those Who Hunt Elves. He also wrote ADR scripts for several Dirty Pair OVAs and New Cutey Honey. MacAvery considered directing a very exciting and fulfilling activity, with a special fondness for his work on Ushio & Tora. His tenure with ADV Films concluded when he was let go from the company, after which he expressed a continued passion for voice acting, writing, and directing. Among the many characters he portrayed, he cited Gendo Ikari as the most satisfying due to the depth he could explore, while maintaining a special appreciation for the purely fun experience of playing Pipi in Rei Rei.
