Description
Gendo Ikari is the supreme commander of the special agency Nerv, which is dedicated to the study and annihilation of mysterious enemies known as Angels. He is the emotionally distant father of Shinji Ikari and the husband of Yui Ikari, whose apparent death has become the central, driving tragedy of his life.
Originally born under the name Gendo Rokubungi, he changed his surname after marrying Yui, whom he met during his university years when he was a solitary figure with a poor reputation. Yui was the first person to show him genuine love, and her loss left him shattered. A brilliant scientist specializing in artificial evolution, his primary motivation is not the cold ambition for power it often appears to be, but rather a deep, obsessive love. His ultimate goal in working on the secretive Human Instrumentality Project is not to follow the plans of the shadowy organization Seele, but to hijack it for his own personal purpose: to be reunited with his beloved wife.
In pursuit of this goal, Gendo has become a master manipulator, willing to use anyone as a pawn. His relationships are almost entirely transactional and aimed at furthering his plans. He exploits the scientific talents and romantic affections of both Dr. Naoko Akagi and later her daughter, Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, without ever reciprocating their feelings. His relationship with his son, Shinji, is marked by extreme coldness and rejection. After Yui disappeared during an Evangelion activation test, Gendo sent the young Shinji away to live with a guardian, believing that his own presence only caused his son pain. This distance masks a deep-seated regret and a fundamental inability to be a parent, a failure he acknowledges during the Instrumentality. In contrast, he shows a clear, almost paternal concern for Rei Ayanami, the enigmatic girl who serves as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-00. He rescues her at great personal risk, burns his hands to save her, and is more capable of communicating with her than with his own son, largely because Rei is an artificial being created from the remnants of his wife Yui.
As commander of Nerv, Gendo is responsible for the defense of Tokyo-3. He is a calculating and pragmatic strategist who remains calm under pressure and is willing to sacrifice anything for victory. His typical posture, often seen with his hands clasped at mouth level, has become an iconic representation of his calculating and inscrutable nature. While Seele intends for the Human Instrumentality Project to forcibly evolve humanity, Gendo secretly plots to initiate his own version of the event. To this end, he implants the embryonic first Angel, Adam, into the palm of his right hand and plans to merge it with the second Angel, Lilith, whose soul resides within Rei.
Gendo’s character undergoes significant development both in the original series and the Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. In The End of Evangelion, his plans ultimately fail when Rei rejects him and chooses to give control of Instrumentality to Shinji. During the process, he is confronted by the spirit of his wife and devoured by a projection of the Eva that contains her soul, finally accepting his own guilt. In the Rebuild films, his backstory is explored in greater depth, revealing a profoundly lonely individual whose life was transformed by Yui. In Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, he uses the Key of Nebuchadnezzar to transcend his humanity, donning a visor to hide his changed appearance. He confronts Shinji directly in a metaphysical space, where his past is laid bare, and he finally explains his actions. The story concludes with a resolution to his arc, as he and Yui choose to sacrifice themselves together to create a new world without Evangelions, allowing their son to live freely.
