Description
Gendo Ikari, originally born as Gendo Rokubungi, is the cold and calculating commander of the special agency NERV. As a brilliant scientist and master strategist, he operates as a shadowy puppet master, playing a dangerous political game with the secret organization SEELE while advancing his own hidden agenda.
His personality is defined by an almost impenetrable emotional coldness and a ruthless willingness to manipulate or discard anyone to achieve his goals. He is an extremely distant and harsh father to his son, Shinji, having abandoned him to live with a teacher after the loss of his wife. Despite his calculated exterior and manipulative affairs with the scientist Naoko Akagi and later her daughter Ritsuko, his primary motivation for orchestrating the Human Instrumentality Project is a surprisingly personal one: a deep, desperate love for his deceased wife, Yui Ikari. He believes that by initiating the Third Impact under his control, he can be reunited with her.
In the events of The End of Evangelion, Gendo's role is that of a conspirator attempting to hijack SEELE's scenario for his own ends. Having fused the embryonic remains of the first Angel, Adam, into the palm of his right hand, he descends to Terminal Dogma with Rei Ayanami, a being he created as a vessel for Yui's soul. His plan is to merge the Adam in his hand with Rei, who carries the soul of Lilith, to invoke the Instrumentality and force a reunion with Yui.
His key relationships are all defined by this singular obsession. His bond with his son, Shinji, is one of profound neglect and emotional abuse, seeing the boy only as a tool to pilot Eva Unit 01, which contains Yui's soul. Rei Ayanami is treated as an object, a puppet created from Yui's genetic material to be used for his plan. His relationship with the Akagi women is purely transactional, using their scientific expertise and affection to secure his position and technological advantage. Only his mentor, Kozo Fuyutsuki, and his deceased wife seem to know his true intentions.
His development in the film culminates in an ultimate failure and a moment of tragic self-realization. When Rei, having absorbed Adam, rejects his command and chooses to merge with Lilith herself, Gendo's master plan collapses. As Instrumentality begins without him, he is confronted by visions of those he has wronged, including a spectral Yui. He finally confesses his deepest flaw: he was terrified of the invisible bonds of emotional intimacy and was unable to face his son after Yui's death. His greatest fear was that loving Shinji would only hurt the boy, so he chose to cut himself off completely. In his final moments, he accepts his fate as retribution, asking for Shinji's forgiveness before being seemingly consumed or decapitated by a vision of Eva Unit 01, leaving only his severed lower body standing.
Among his notable abilities are his immense political cunning and scientific knowledge, allowing him to navigate the complex conspiracies surrounding NERV and SEELE. He also physically carries the embryo of Adam fused into his right hand, a secret he keeps hidden under his trademark gloves, alongside the severe burn scars from rescuing Rei in a previous accident.
