Description
"AWOL - Absent WithOut Leave" is a science fiction anime series set in a dystopian future where humanity is locked in a perpetual war against an advanced alien species known as the "Xenoids." The story centers on a group of soldiers who desert their military unit, going AWOL, after uncovering a conspiracy that implicates their own government in unethical experiments and the manipulation of the war for political gain. The narrative explores themes of survival, morality, and the cost of rebellion in a world where trust is scarce and betrayal is commonplace.

The protagonist, Lieutenant Kael Armitage, is a skilled but disillusioned soldier who leads the deserters. Kael's decision to abandon his post is driven by the discovery of Project Erebus, a clandestine initiative that uses captured Xenoids to create hybrid soldiers, blurring the line between human and alien. Alongside Kael is Sergeant Mira Voss, a tactical expert with a personal vendetta against the Xenoids, and Corporal Jax Teller, a tech-savvy engineer who provides the group with critical support. Together, they navigate a hostile landscape filled with enemy patrols, rogue factions, and the ever-present threat of their former comrades hunting them down.

As the group evades capture, they uncover deeper layers of the conspiracy, including the government's use of propaganda to control public perception and the true nature of the Xenoids' origins. The series delves into the psychological toll of war, with flashbacks revealing the characters' past traumas and motivations. The deserters must also grapple with internal conflicts, as differing ideologies and personal agendas threaten to fracture their fragile alliance.

The plot is driven by a series of high-stakes missions, including infiltrating military facilities, sabotaging enemy operations, and rescuing civilians caught in the crossfire. The narrative builds toward a climactic confrontation with the government's elite forces, culminating in a revelation that challenges the very foundation of the war and humanity's role in it. The series concludes with an open-ended resolution, leaving room for interpretation regarding the characters' fates and the future of their rebellion.

1Prelude to Decay
The terrorist organization Solomon, led by Duran Gash, seizes seven planet-destroying PDP missiles and launches coordinated attacks across multiple cities. The United Forces military sends in a special forces team to neutralize the threat, but Solomon anticipates the move and annihilates the entire unit. The mission fails completely, leaving the military leadership without a viable countermeasure. Ex-special forces captain Jim Hyatt receives orders to assemble a new team for an impossible mission: infiltrate Solomon's operations, rescue any hostages, and either recover or destroy the stolen missiles. Rather than deploy conventional soldiers, Hyatt recruits from a pool of AWOL fugitives and convicted criminals, selecting individuals with highly specialized but unorthodox skills. The recruits include Chris Sheridan, Jean Bishop, Zack Landis, Nelson the Bomb, Dana McLaren, and Rachel Hearst. The team members arrive with visible animosity toward one another, their past conflicts and personal grudges surfacing immediately. Hyatt asserts command over the reluctant group, making clear that their collective survival depends on setting aside their differences. The episode closes with the newly formed unit preparing to deploy against Solomon, carrying the weight of a mission that the regular military failed to accomplish.
3Episode 3
Episode three introduces the protagonist,Jim Hyatt, after the preceding two episodes established the villains and a failed initial task force. Hyatt leads a team on a mission to rescue a hostage held by terrorists. The rescue operation proceeds with military precision, but upon securing the target, Hyatt discovers the hostage is actually cooperating with the terrorists. The mission’s success becomes tainted by this deception. Hyatt receives a badge of honor for the operation, yet he silently refuses to wear it, rejecting the hollow commendation. This episode operates as a standalone character introduction; its events bear no connection to the larger conflict involving the stolen ballistic missile. The terrorists featured here have no relation to the series’ primary antagonists. The episode’s self-contained nature allowed it to be removed entirely when the series was recut into an OVA for the Japanese home video market, despite being considered a highlight of the television run. With the hero’s background established in isolation, the series must now pivot back to the unresolved threat of the main villains and their stolen weapon.

Jim Hyatt organizes a new unit to carry out his mission. He selects professionals who operate outside conventional harmony, forming a team of dissonant specialists. The Allied forces continue their erratic course, descending further into a path of uncontrolled collapse. Terrorists repeat acts of carnage, advancing their positions in a dangerous game. Hyatt's formation of the unit serves as a direct response to the escalating chaos. The team assembles with the clear objective of countering the terrorist threat. Each member brings a specific skill set to the operation. The episode establishes the unit's composition and the immediate stakes of their assignment. Hyatt assumes command, setting the stage for the mission's execution. The curtain falls on the life-risking task as the episode concludes. The next phase begins with the unit preparing to face the consequences of their formation.
