Atsuko Tanaka

Description
Atsuko Tanaka was a renowned Japanese voice actress and narrator, celebrated for her deep, commanding voice and her long-standing portrayal of strong, intelligent, and often mysterious women in anime, video games, and dubbed foreign media. She was born on November 14, 1962, in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, and passed away on August 20, 2024.

Tanaka's path to voice acting was not a direct one. After graduating from Ferris University, she worked as an office lady at a company in Tokyo for about six years. During this time, she continued to pursue her interest in dance but ultimately decided to shift her focus to acting. Inspired by meeting a fellow dancer who was a voice actor, she enrolled in the Tokyo Announcement Academy to study voice acting, graduating in 1991. She then joined Ezaki Production, which later became Mausu Promotion, the agency she was affiliated with for the rest of her career.

She is perhaps best known for her definitive role as Motoko Kusanagi, the protagonist of the Ghost in the Shell franchise. She first voiced the character in the 1995 film and continued to play her for 27 years, including in the series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, its sequel 2nd GIG, the film Solid State Society, and the later series SAC_2045. This role is frequently cited as one of the most memorable of her career.

Her notable anime roles, many of which were specified by the user, include the fierce Karura in the Utawarerumono series, the sorceress Caster in the Fate franchise (including Fate/stay night, Carnival Phantasm, and Today's Menu for the Emiya Family), and the villainous Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen. She also voiced Konan in Naruto: Shippuden, Lisa Lisa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Harumi Kiyama in A Certain Scientific Railgun, and Claudette in the Queen's Blade series.

She was also the regular Japanese dubbing voice for several major Hollywood actresses, including Nicole Kidman, Kate Beckinsale, and Jennifer Lopez, and she voiced Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider game series for five installments.

Throughout her career, Tanaka had recurring collaborations with specific studios and franchises, most notably her multi-decade association with the Ghost in the Shell universe. She frequently appeared in works by studio ufotable, such as the Fate series and God Eater. Her distinctive vocal range and ability to portray both heroes and villains with equal skill made her a sought-after talent in the industry.

In recognition of her contributions, Tanaka won the Foreign Movie/Drama Award at the 14th Seiyu Awards in 2020. She was married and had a son, Hikaru Tanaka, who also became a voice actor. Atsuko Tanaka passed away in 2024 after a battle with an undisclosed illness, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the world of Japanese voice acting.
