Description
Echidna Parass is a significant antagonist in the Black Cat anime, serving as a high-ranking member of the terrorist organization known as the Apostles of the Star. Before joining this group, Echidna lived a very different life as a world-famous actress, having starred in over twenty movies and won numerous awards for her talent and beauty. Her past fame is such that she is occasionally recognized by enemies who encounter her, often expressing confusion as to why a celebrated actress would join a terrorist cause.
In terms of personality, Echidna presents herself with a veneer of courtesy and politeness, greeting both friends and foes cordially. However, this surface-level grace conceals a deeply cold, calculating, and indifferent nature. She almost never loses her poise or composure, even when surprised or angered, and she holds no value for her past life as an actress. Echidna is intensely devoted to Creed Diskenth, the leader of the Apostles of the Star, with a strong implication that she is in love with him. Despite this devotion, she is not blindly obedient and is one of the few people who dares to openly criticize or lecture Creed, often to distance herself from the blame for his more extreme actions. She despises what she perceives as weakness and considers chivalry or fighting fairly to be a liability, preferring underhanded tactics to ensure victory.
Echidna's role within the Apostles of the Star is multifaceted. She is one of Creed's most trusted operatives, effectively serving as a de facto right hand alongside the character known as Doctor. Her unique abilities make her invaluable for logistics and transportation, as she is frequently tasked with moving members of the group from one location to another or bringing specific individuals to Creed. In combat, she is described as an elite warrior on par with every other Apostle. She primarily wields guns and daggers in battle, but her true power lies in her use of Tao, the supernatural martial art in the series. Her specific Tao ability is called Gate. This power allows her to create wormholes in space that link two different places. Using these portals, she can warp herself and others across short or long distances. Offensively, she can fire bullets into one wormhole and have them emerge from multiple others surrounding a target, making her attacks unpredictable and nearly impossible to dodge. She can also use her power to redirect an enemy's attack back at them or appear silently behind a foe for a surprise killing blow.
Key relationships define much of her character arc. Her loyalty to Creed is the central driving force behind her actions, and she is perhaps the person who understands him best, even while harboring private fears about his most twisted projects. She interacts with other Apostles like Shiki and Doctor, but her interactions with the protagonists are primarily adversarial. She repeatedly confronts the bounty hunter Train Heartnet and his partners, Sven Vollfield and Eve. During a mission to force a scientist to work for Creed, she witnesses Train's powerful Rail Gun ability for the first time, which she notes as a significant threat. Later, she attempts to eliminate Sven and Eve, only to be thwarted by Sven's prescient vision ability and intervention from the reformed Apostle Eathes.
Throughout the story, Echidna exhibits a subtle but notable development. While she remains a staunch supporter of Creed, deep down she is afraid of his ambition to become something more than human, such as his pursuit of immortality through nanomachines. In the climax of the conflict, after the protagonists defeat Creed and destroy his immortality, Echidna does nothing to stop them. She confesses that she was afraid all along that Creed would transform into something beyond her reach. This moment of vulnerability reveals that her loyalty was to the man himself, not his monstrous aspirations. Following his defeat, Echidna takes the nearly vegetative Creed to a secluded house in the mountains, dedicating herself to caring for him for the rest of her life. This final act solidifies her role not just as a villain, but as a tragic figure whose devotion ultimately defines her entire existence.
