Description
The anime series "Devil May Cry" adapts the popular video game franchise of the same name, centering on Dante, a demon hunter who operates a freelance agency called Devil May Cry. Dante is a half-human, half-demon hybrid, inheriting his supernatural abilities from his father, the legendary demon Sparda, who once rebelled against his kind to protect humanity. The series explores Dante's life as he takes on various demon-hunting jobs, often encountering dangerous foes and uncovering deeper mysteries tied to his lineage.
The narrative begins with Dante accepting a job from a woman named Patty Lowell, who seeks his help in dealing with a demonic threat. As the story progresses, Dante's missions intertwine with his personal history, revealing his strained relationship with his twin brother, Vergil, who embraces their demonic heritage and seeks power. The conflict between the brothers serves as a central theme, highlighting their differing philosophies and the legacy of their father.
Throughout the series, Dante faces a variety of adversaries, including demons and humans corrupted by demonic influence. His encounters often lead to larger revelations about the demon world and its connection to humanity. The episodic structure of the series allows for standalone missions while gradually building an overarching plot tied to Dante's past and the resurgence of demonic activity.
Key characters include Trish, a demoness created in the image of Dante's mother, who assists him in his missions, and Lady, a human demon hunter with her own vendetta against demons. These characters add depth to the narrative, providing different perspectives on the conflict between humans and demons. The series balances action-packed sequences with moments of introspection, delving into Dante's internal struggles and his role as a protector of humanity despite his demonic nature.
The anime maintains a focus on Dante's charismatic yet laid-back personality, his signature combat style, and his use of iconic weapons like Rebellion and Ebony & Ivory. The story culminates in a confrontation that ties together the personal and external conflicts, emphasizing themes of identity, legacy, and the blurred line between good and evil. The series serves as a bridge between the games, offering additional context to Dante's character and his world.

Mayor Mike Hegel hires Dante to kill Bradley,a young man courting his daughter Angelina. Hegel suspects Bradley is a demon responsible for recent murders in Capulet City. Dante confirms his belief in their love and spares Bradley. Bradley reveals that a human summoned the demon Belphagor to destroy the city and asks Dante to stop the summoning. At the Hegel residence, the butler stabs the mayor to use him as a sacrifice. Dante stops the butler from killing Angelina while Bradley drags Hegel to safety. Belphagor begins to emerge, but Dante forces the demon back and closes the portal. Bradley heals Hegel despite the mayor’s protests. Dante declines payment, stating he only kills true demons and that Bradley understands love. Morrison later fixes Patty’s television while Dante reads a letter from Bradley and Angelina, who now live together with her father’s approval. Dante accepts the outcome despite working without pay.
4All Hope Abandon
Mary and her team track the White Rabbit’s forces to a ruined building, but the location reveals itself as a trap. An announcement over the intercom warns demon civilians inside that humans have infiltrated, inciting high-level demons to attack the group. Most of Mary’s team dies in the assault, forcing her to flee alone into an elevator. She escapes into a residential floor where purple gas fills the corridors, and a low-level demon family hides her from the White Rabbit’s search party. The family explains they are refugees whose realm became uninhabitable, and they seek only safety on Earth. Mary promises to protect them as she continues hunting the White Rabbit. Meanwhile, unconscious Dante relives a memory of his mother giving him a red amulet and his brother a blue one. The White Rabbit invades the dream, reminding Dante he is the son of Sparda. Dante wakes bound on a hijacked plane where the White Rabbit appears on a screen, threatening to kill the human hostages unless Dante, as Sparda’s son, saves them. Dante breaks free and battles twin elemental demons, their powers triggering a flashback to the night his mother and brother were attacked. The memory activates his demon trigger, transforming half his body and granting him immense speed and strength. As Dante fights mid-air, Mary navigates the demon-controlled building with newly gained knowledge that not all demons are enemies, setting both on a collision course with the White Rabbit’s broader plan.
5Descent
Dante,Enzo, and Vice President Baines fall from the destroyed Air Force 2. Dante leaps through the wreckage, catching passengers mid-air. He transforms into a winged demon form, his Devil Trigger, to slow the descent and bring everyone safely to the ground. Inside the White Rabbit’s hideout, Lady evades demons and discovers a laboratory where the White Rabbit performed experiments on other demons. She encounters a colleague, but recognizes him as the shape-shifting demon Plasma when he uses the demon name for Hell, Makai. Lady offers to trade information about Darkcom for her life, but Echidna ambushes them. Lady tricks Plasma into taking her form, causing Echidna to attack her ally. Lady kills Echidna with demon-killing bullets. Above ground, Baines, having witnessed Dante’s transformation, orders Darkcom soldiers to kill all demon refugees the organization previously sheltered. Plasma watches the massacre and, in response, detonates the laboratory, committing suicide. Dante lands with the survivors and reunites with Lady. Lady admits Dante was right about his demonic heritage, and they agree to work together to find his amulet. She determines the White Rabbit needs Dante’s blood to activate a plan to destroy the barrier between worlds, as the Rabbit warns Dante that refusing will unleash a demon army.
6The First Circle
The episode presents dual origin stories for Mary and the White Rabbit through separate narratives. Young Mary witnesses her father,John Arkham, inject himself with demon blood after a violent argument with her mother, Kalina Ann, leading to her mother’s death and the family home burning down. Mary escapes the fire and later joins DARKCOM, rising to lieutenant while leading missions to eliminate demons. During a raid on a warehouse, Mary’s team kills several Makaians after a large demon pursues them through a portal. The other narrative follows a human boy who, after suffering abuse in foster care, walks through a portal to the Makai. He finds acceptance among a community of demons but witnesses one child die from the toxic air, prompting him to use a discovered gem to create portals for others to escape to the human world. Years later, this young man leads a group of Makaians through a portal directly into Mary’s ambush. When a pursuing demon attacks, Mary’s unit opens fire, killing the Makaians and wounding the man before she detonates explosives to finish the demon. The man survives, laughs amidst the corpses of his adopted family, and later sews a rabbit hood onto his head, formally becoming the White Rabbit. The episode employs two distinct animation styles, with the human world rendered in a muted palette and the Makai depicted in a vibrant, cartoonish aesthetic, and features minimal dialogue throughout. Dante does not appear in the episode, shifting focus entirely to the events that forged Mary’s hatred for demons and the White Rabbit’s vendetta against DARKCOM. The closing moments show the White Rabbit in his hideout, connecting images of DARKCOM soldiers with red string, marking Mary and her team as his primary targets for revenge.
7At the Gates of Paradise
The White Rabbit travels to the demon realm and meets a horned demon resembling Sparda who carries the sword and a piece of the amulet. The demon provides a vial of Vergil's blood, confirming the existence of Dante's brother. Mary regains consciousness and detains Dante, intending to trade him to the White Rabbit to end the conflict. She confronts the Rabbit with an offer: Dante's life for the city and the amulet. The Rabbit agrees, but Mary triggers an explosion to fake Dante's death, and demons immediately paralyze her with poison-coated weapons. Dante breaks free, and the Rabbit shows him the demon realm, where poisoned air makes Dante gag. The Rabbit argues he must correct Sparda's mistake by allowing millions of humans to die to save demonkind from extinction. Dante refuses and battles Cavaliere Angelo, defeating the demon by closing the portal mid-swing, slicing the creature in half. The White Rabbit unmasks to Mary, revealing his human origins, a crippled body sustained by a demon-blood artificial heart, and his vendetta against DARKCOM. Dante quickly overpowers the Rabbit, who warns that Dante could have prevented the coming tragedy before falling into the water. In the aftermath, Vice President Baines declares the fight the opening of a holy war against Hell.

He retrieves his sword Rebellion and kills the demon in a direct confrontation. The group returns to the office, where Patty expresses frustration at being left out of the plan, and they play poker, ending with Dante losing the game.

Modeus learns of Baul's challenge and attempts to intervene, wanting to preserve the peaceful life he has built, but he fails to stop the confrontation. Dante accepts the duel and kills Baul in a sword fight. Enraged by his brother's death, Modeus abandons his peaceful existence, picks up a sword again, and attacks Dante seeking vengeance. Dante kills Modeus as well. After the battle, Dante digs graves and buries the two brothers, showing regret for their deaths. 12Stylish!

She enters the demonic dimension and reaches the immobilized Dante, waking him from his imprisonment. Dante returns to the human world and confronts Sid, who now wields Abigail's power. Sid mocks Dante's efforts, but Dante activates his Devil Trigger, unleashing an explosion of power. The blast strips away Sid's borrowed power, reverting him to his original, weak demon form. Dante finishes the fight with a single gunshot, killing Sid permanently. In the epilogue, Dante, Lady, and Trish depart on a new demon-hunting mission, making a bet on who will reach their target first. Patty arrives at the office to clean the lingering disarray, maintaining her connection to Dante despite the crisis ending.
