Description
Baul is a demon and a former apprentice of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda. As one of Sparda's two pupils, alongside his twin brother Modeus, Baul is a figure defined by a millennia-old obsession with surpassing his master. He appears in the Devil May Cry animated series, where his ancient quest brings him into conflict with Sparda's son, Dante.

In terms of background, Baul and his brother were trained by Sparda himself in the demon world. Before Sparda left to seal the demon world and protect the human realm, he entrusted his power and will to Modeus, an act that created a deep and lasting sense of resentment in Baul. For two thousand years after Sparda's departure, Baul waited, his desire to challenge and overcome his master festering until he learned of the existence of Dante, Sparda's son. Seeing Dante as the heir to the power he craves, Baul vows to kill him and claim the blood of Sparda for himself.

Personality-wise, Baul is portrayed as the darker and more disciplined of the twin brothers. He is consumed by his goal, having spent two millennia fixated on proving his strength. His envy of his brother is a central aspect of his character; he contemptuously resents Modeus for being the recipient of their master's true strength, a quality of honor that Baul feels he himself lacks. Despite this jealousy and bitterness, his feelings for his brother are not simple hatred. A complex love lies beneath the surface, and his actions are ultimately intertwined with his fraternal relationship.

This relationship with Modeus is Baul's most significant key relationship. Their bond is fraught with tension, as Baul envies the honor and power entrusted to his brother, yet still loves him. This dynamic drives much of the conflict in his story. When Baul confronts Dante, his brother attempts to intervene and stop the duel, wanting to prevent the violence. After Baul is defeated and killed by Dante, it is Modeus who, abandoning his peaceful life, takes up his sword again to avenge his fallen brother, leading to his own death.

Baul's role in the story is that of a direct antagonist, a relic of Sparda's past who brings an ancient, personal grudge into the present. He serves as a physical and thematic challenge for Dante, representing the consequences of Sparda's legacy. The duel is not merely a fight but a test of inherited power, as Baul seeks to prove himself superior to the son of the master he could never surpass. His death, and the subsequent death of his brother, highlights the tragic cost of his obsession.

Regarding his development, Baul shows little change over the course of his long life; he remains single-mindedly focused on his goal. However, his final battle forces a moment of clarity. In his dying moments, wounded and leaning on his sword, he refuses to accept defeat, motivated not only by his own pride but also for the sake of Modeus, the brother who gave up swordsmanship for him. This reveals that his ambition is not entirely selfish but is also tied to a sense of duty and love for his twin.

In terms of notable abilities, Baul is an immensely powerful and immortal demon, having lived for over two thousand years. His reputation is fearsome; according to other demons, when he takes his sword in hand, he can kill thousands in a split second. He is a highly skilled dual-wielding swordsman, using two blades similar in design to Dante's Rebellion. His fighting style is aggressive, relying on overwhelming brute force and blinding speed to pin down and overpower his opponents. In his first assault, he manages to pin Dante to a wall with his two swords, and he also survives a direct hit from Lady's powerful Kalina Ann rocket launcher with no visible injury. When pushed to his limits, Baul can unleash his true demonic form, where his white trenchcoat disappears and his body is covered in a white, chitinous hide reminiscent of the Devil Triggers seen in other Devil May Cry media. In this state, he becomes even more ferocious, though his aggressive style still leaves openings in his defenses.
