Description
Paul is a minor character in the Devil May Cry anime, introduced through a story centred on his gambling. He is described as having been a very rational man before his marriage, but after marrying his wife Sara his behaviour changed drastically and he became a gambling addict. The addiction eventually grew into a serious problem, and Sara, afraid for his safety, contacted Dante and asked him to intervene and stop Paul.

Paul's role in the story is that of an ordinary civilian whose personal troubles bring him into contact with Dante rather than a participant in the larger demonic conflicts of the series. His gambling leads him onto a luxury cruise, where he joins a high-stakes card game against well-known poker players, including a woman named Amanda. This game and the events surrounding it form the central situation of the episode in which he appears and give Dante a reason to become involved on behalf of Paul's family.

In terms of personality, Paul is defined by the contrast between the rational man he was before marriage and the reckless behaviour brought on by his addiction. He continues to gamble despite the harm it causes, and his inability to control himself is the trait that drives his story. His motivations are personal rather than connected to the supernatural events elsewhere in the series; his conflict stems from his compulsion and the danger that it creates for him.

Paul's important relationships are with his wife, Sara, who seeks outside help when she becomes concerned for his well-being, and with Amanda, one of the well-known players he faces in the card game. His connection to Dante is indirect, since it is Sara who hires Dante to intervene.

Paul does not have a continuing storyline. He remains a minor presence in the anime, with his gambling crisis contained to a single episode, and he is not portrayed with any combat skills or supernatural abilities. His function in the story is to serve as an example of an ordinary person whose own behaviour puts him in a dangerous situation that requires Dante's help.
