Description
Nina Lowell is a supporting character in the Devil May Cry anime series, known as the long‑lost mother of Patty Lowell. She is a descendant of the legendary alchemist Alan Lowell and was entrusted with the protection of a powerful gem called Alan’s Tear, which was fashioned into a pendant. This pendant holds the key to unleashing the formidable demon Abigail, making Nina a target for demonic forces that seek to obtain it.

Nina’s background is marked by sacrifice and self‑preservation. Aware of the constant danger posed by demons pursuing her amulet, she made the difficult decision to leave her infant daughter Patty behind for adoption, believing this would shield Patty from the life of peril she herself endured. For years, Nina’s whereabouts remained unknown as she spent much of her time in hiding, moving from place to place to evade her supernatural pursuers. Her primary motivation is to protect the Alan’s Tear and prevent it from falling into demonic hands, a duty that stems from her family lineage.

In the story, Nina serves as a crucial figure in the conflict surrounding Abigail. Her presence introduces a key plot device—the amulet—that drives the narrative toward a confrontation with the ultimate demon. She is also the reason Patty becomes involved with Dante and the demon‑hunting world, as Patty’s search for her mother leads to the revelation of Nina’s true situation. A significant twist involves a demon that impersonates Nina, using her appearance to deceive others; this false Nina demonstrates shape‑shifting abilities and some degree of physical resilience, though she proves vulnerable to attacks.

Nina’s personality is defined by caution, resilience, and a deep, if painful, sense of maternal care. Her decision to abandon Patty was not born from neglect but from a protective instinct, and later encounters show a reserved but caring nature. Her relationship with Patty is central to the emotional arc of the story, as mother and daughter are ultimately reunited after years of separation. Nina’s development involves moving from a lone guardian into a figure who can finally embrace her daughter and let go of the burdens of her past.

Notable abilities include her role as the keeper of Alan’s Tear, which possesses demon‑slaying properties. While she does not exhibit supernatural combat skills, her resourcefulness and endurance in evading demons for years demonstrate a strong survival instinct. Her physical appearance is that of an adult woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, often depicted in simple clothing suited to a life of hiding.
