TV-Series
Description
Hanami is a Special Grade cursed spirit from the manga and anime Jujutsu Kaisen. This entity was born from humanity's collective fear and hatred of forests, giving it a deep, intrinsic connection to nature and plant life.
In terms of personality, Hanami is notably calm, soft-spoken, and thoughtful, a stark contrast to many other cursed spirits who are driven purely by malice. The creator of the series has described Hanami's personality as the gentlest among the curses, often playing the role of a mother figure within its group of allies, which includes Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito. Despite this gentleness, Hanami holds a profound and unwavering conviction that humanity must be eradicated. It believes that humans have abused the planet for millennia and that nature requires a period without them to recover. While it acknowledges the existence of kind-hearted people, Hanami concludes that coexistence is impossible, making it an extreme, eco-centric antagonist. This loyalty extends to its companions; it risked its own life to rescue Jogo from the immensely powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo.
Within the story, Hanami serves as a major antagonist, acting as a key agent in the plan to seal Satoru Gojo. It first appears alongside Jogo and the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku, agreeing to cooperate in their scheme to reshape the world. During the Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event, Hanami infiltrates the barriers of Jujutsu High—its presence is so akin to a natural spirit that the barriers identify it as a plant. It attacks the students to create a diversion while an ally steals cursed objects. In this confrontation, Hanami displays its overwhelming power by single-handedly fighting multiple skilled students, including Megumi Fushiguro, Maki Zenin, and Toge Inumaki, before being forced to retreat upon Gojo's arrival.
Hanami's key relationships are primarily with its fellow disaster curses. It shares a close kinship with Jogo, Dagon, and Mahito, working with them as a cohesive family unit. It is notably loyal to Jogo and follows Mahito's lead in the group's operations. While allied with the ancient curse user Kenjaku, it is the bond with its fellow curses that defines its actions.
In terms of development, Hanami evolves slightly as a combatant. Initially, it views fighting merely as a means to an end. However, after a fierce battle against the sorcerers Yuji Itadori and Aoi Todo, and influenced by Mahito's embrace of savagery, Hanami begins to enjoy the thrill of battle, pushing itself beyond its previous limits. This development is cut short during the Shibuya Incident arc, where Hanami, alongside Jogo and Choso, confronts Satoru Gojo directly. By skillfully using a technique called Domain Amplification, they manage to neutralize Gojo's defensive abilities and land blows on him. However, Gojo exploits a critical moment when Hanami drops its amplification to use its innate technique, killing the cursed spirit instantly.
Hanami possesses several notable abilities, all centered around its innate technique for generating and manipulating plants. This technique allows it to create various forms of cursed flora, from enormous, piercing roots to floating wooden spheres that can be used for attack or transportation. One of its most dangerous techniques is the Cursed Seed, a projectile that feeds on the target's cursed energy, growing stronger the more the victim defends. The only effective counter is to lower one's cursed energy defense and endure the physical impact. Another ability is the Flower Field, which instantly creates a bed of flowers whose scent relaxes the mind and lowers an opponent's will to fight. On its left shoulder resides a flower bud that functions as an offering. Hanami can absorb the life force from surrounding plants to convert into cursed energy, which is then stored in this flower. When the flower blooms, it reveals an eye and can release the stored energy in a powerful blast. However, Hanami dislikes using this ability as it harms the nature it cherishes. Furthermore, Hanami is exceptionally durable, withstanding attacks that would have destroyed other Special Grade curses like Jogo. Its only visible weak points are the small branches growing where its eyes should be. Hanami is also highly skilled at concealing its presence and can move through plants, making it a stealthy and difficult opponent to track, a skill Gojo himself acknowledged. Finally, it has the capability to perform a Domain Expansion, the Ceremonial Sea of Light, though it was interrupted before its effects could be fully realized.
