Description
Flamme is a legendary figure in the world of magic, known as the great mage and the founder of human magic. She was a human woman who lived approximately one thousand years before the main events of the story, and over the centuries, her historical legacy became so mythologized that statues erected in her honor, such as those found in the Northern Empire, mistakenly depict her as a mature man. Her name is derived from the German word for flame.

Flamme's early life was marked by tragedy, as she lost her hometown and both parents to demons, leaving her as the sole survivor. This traumatic experience instilled in her a deep-seated hatred for demons, to the point of wishing for their complete eradication. During her childhood, she was discovered by Serie, an ancient and immensely powerful elven mage who recognized her talent and took her in as a disciple. However, Flamme and her master held contrasting philosophies. While Serie believed that magic should belong only to those with exceptional talent, Flamme dreamed of a peaceful world where magic could be used by everyone, not just a select few. Despite Serie calling Flamme a failure due to their ideological differences, their relationship remained close, and Serie held a genuine fondness for the disciple she had raised.

Flamme is portrayed as an eccentric, sarcastic, and somewhat twisted individual. Her own disciple, Frieren, often described her as unpleasant. Her teaching methods could be unconventional and biased, ranging from lessons on flirtatious gestures like blowing kisses to introducing potions that dissolve clothing. However, beneath this difficult exterior, she was deeply caring, loyal, and warmhearted. Her love for magic was profound, sparked by a simple spell taught to her by her parents: the spell to produce a beautiful field of flowers, which remained her favorite throughout her life. This dream of a world where everyone could learn such joyful magic drove her to change human society. At a time when magic was feared and avoided as a demonic technique, she persuaded the emperor of the largest nation, the Unified Empire, to officially authorize magical research and participated in the education of court mages, thereby laying the foundation for the modern magic civilization seen in the series.

Flamme's role in the story is primarily as the mentor of Frieren. She encountered Frieren when the young elf was seriously injured after her village was destroyed by demons. Seeing Frieren's exceptional talent and sharing her hatred of demons, Flamme accepted her as her only disciple. She taught Frieren her signature combat style, which involves suppressing her own mana to an extreme degree. By deliberately causing enemies, who are highly sensitive to mana, to misjudge her true strength, she could lure them into a false sense of security before defeating them with surprise attacks. Flamme openly embraced this deceptive and underhanded tactic, stating that it was acceptable for only them to be viewed as cowards if it meant defeating demons. She also passed on to Frieren her deep love for magic itself and prophesied that Frieren would one day become someone capable of defeating the Demon King. Approximately fifty years after they met, Flamme realized her life was nearing its end. Before passing away peacefully, she taught Frieren her most cherished spell, the one to produce a field of flowers, and requested that Frieren use it to surround her grave.

Flamme possessed exceptional insight and foresight. She accurately predicted that Frieren, having lived so long, would one day regret not understanding humans and would wish to speak with the dead. For this reason, she left behind handwritten records concerning Aureole, the legendary resting place of souls in the far north where it is said one can communicate with the deceased. These records became the ultimate destination of Frieren's journey, as they offered a way for her to see the hero Himmel once more. Flamme's abilities were legendary, with her master Serie acknowledging that she had the potential to surpass her. The barriers Flamme constructed in her time remained intact for a thousand years, a testament to their extraordinary strength and sophistication. She also developed the combat philosophy of mana suppression, a technique that would define both her legacy and Frieren's method of demon eradication for centuries to come.
