Description
In the narrative of Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, the Servant known as Caster is the prisoner of a tragic identity. She is Medea, the princess of Colchis from Greek mythology, a powerful magus from the Age of Gods whose legendary life was defined by betrayal. Cursed by the goddess Aphrodite to fall in love with the hero Jason, she betrayed her father and homeland to help him, even killing her own brother to ensure their escape. Her reward for this devotion was ultimately to be cast aside by Jason for another woman, an act of abandonment that cemented her reputation as the Witch of Betrayal.
Her participation in the Holy Grail War begins with a continuation of this pattern. Initially summoned by a wealthy but talentless mage from the Mages Association, she found herself treated with suspicion and disrespect. Her master limited her power and prepared to use her as a disposable tool, which she recognized as the same exploitation she had suffered in life. Caster patiently manipulated him into wasting his three Command Spells before killing him with her Noble Phantasm, severing their contract as she had long planned to do. On the verge of vanishing without a master, she stumbled upon Souichirou Kuzuki at the base of Ryuudou Temple. In a desperate act, she begged this stranger for his help, and he agreed without hesitation, forming a new contract with her.
This encounter fundamentally changes Caster. Kuzuki, a man of unnerving sincerity and reticence, asks for nothing in return and accepts her completely without judgment. For the first time in her life, she experiences genuine kindness not born of magical compulsion or self-interest. Her entire objective in the war shifts away from the Holy Grail itself; her sole wish becomes to preserve the short time she has with Kuzuki. This relationship, more than any grand ambition, defines her actions throughout the Unlimited Blade Works route. She establishes her workshop at Ryuudou Temple, draining magical energy from the citizens of Fuyuki City to fortify her position and sustain her existence, not for power, but for survival and to protect her new life.
Caster is a master strategist and plotter, viewing other participants in the war not as warriors, but as pieces to be maneuvered. Her personality is a study in contradictions, shaped by a life of being used and vilified. She was never innately wicked; rather, she accepted the role of a witch because it was the only identity others would allow her. She hates being called a witch, willing to forgive the first offense but promising an appropriate punishment for a second. She appreciates silence and sincerity in men, has a fondness for adorable girls and their clothing, and holds a notable disdain for muscles and a merciless attitude toward mature women. Her actions, while often ruthless, stem from a deep-seated weariness of being a scapegoat for the ugliness of others.
In the Unlimited Blade Works storyline, her role as an antagonist is pivotal. After capturing Shirou Emiya's teacher, Taiga Fujimura, as a hostage, she forces a confrontation. Using her Noble Phantasm, Rule Breaker, she stabs Saber and severs her contract with Shirou, taking control of the powerful Servant for herself. Shortly after, she repeats this treachery with Archer, nullifying his contract with Rin Tohsaka. For a brief time, she stands as one of the most powerful players in the war, having acquired two Servants. However, her motivations remain personal rather than world-shattering; her goal is not to claim the Grail for ultimate power, but to use her strengthened position to ensure her peaceful days with Kuzuki cannot be threatened.
Ultimately, Caster's development reveals a tragic figure who finally found something worth protecting. Her most notable abilities are a testament to her origin as a magus from the Age of Gods, a time when magic was a True Miracle far surpassing modern sorcery. Her primary Noble Phantasm is Rule Breaker, an iridescent dagger that acts as an anti-magic weapon. While it has almost no offensive capability, it can nullify any form of magecraft, permanently severing magical contracts, dismantling bounded fields, and even destroying familiars created by magic. She uses this tool most effectively to sever and then re-forge the master-servant bonds of her enemies. Beyond this, she possesses vast magical knowledge, can teleport, create autonomous familiars like the Dragon Tooth Warriors, and construct powerful magical barriers. Despite her immense power, her story ends not in a grand battle for the Grail, but in a moment of personal loyalty. When Archer unleashes a hailstorm of blades upon her and Kuzuki, she uses her own body to shield her master, dying to protect the first person who ever showed her true sincerity.
