1Anju to Zushioumaru
Anju and Zushioumaru live peacefully with their father,a steward who oversees the emperor’s hunting grounds. He teaches them to respect nature and protect animals. A local official named Onikura asks to marry Anju, but her father refuses. Onikura retaliates by framing the steward for burning the hunting grounds. While the father is summoned to Kyoto, Onikura and his men attack the family home. Anju, Zushioumaru, their mother, and a servant flee into the wilderness. During their journey, they board separate boats after being deceived by bandits. The siblings arrive in the port city of Yura, where a slave trader sells them to Sansho the Bailiff. Sansho forces them into hard labor under constant threat of torture. Anju endures the grueling work while protecting her younger brother. One night, Zushioumaru attempts to escape, and Anju helps him. During the escape, Anju falls into a lake and transforms into a swan. Zushioumaru reaches Kyoto and learns of his father’s death. With help from a nobleman’s daughter, he gains a position as governor and returns to confront Sansho. He defeats the cruel bailiff and frees the slaves, but discovers his mother has also died and transformed into a crane.
