Hikaru Midorikawa
Description
Hikaru Midorikawa is a prominent Japanese voice actor born on May 2, 1968, in Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. He is affiliated with the talent agency Aoni Production. His path to becoming a voice actor was set in his childhood after watching Mobile Suit Gundam and reading an article about its cast, which inspired him to pursue a career in the field. Following his graduation from high school, he moved to Tokyo and enrolled in the Aoni Juku training school, graduating as part of the 8th generation. He made his professional debut in 1988 with a minor role in the anime Kiteretsu Daihyakka.
Midorikawa's first major recurring role came in 1991 as Naoki Shinjo in Future GPX Cyber Formula. This role is often cited as a significant turning point in his early career. The following year, he gained further experience with the emotionally expressive role of Shintaro in Nangoku Shonen Papuwa-kun, which provided him with valuable training. However, it was his portrayal of the quiet and intensely focused Kaede Rukawa in the 1993 sports anime Slam Dunk that established him as a leading voice actor and created one of his most iconic roles. That same year, he also landed his first lead role in a television anime as Toshihiko Tanaka in Aoki Densetsu Shoot!. In 1995, he achieved a long-held dream by voicing the protagonist Heero Yuy in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, a performance that cemented his association with cool, handsome, and often emotionally reserved characters.
Throughout his extensive career, Midorikawa has become renowned for his work in this archetype, lending his voice to a vast array of characters across anime, video games, and drama CDs. His notable roles include Zelgadis Greywords in The Slayers, Tamahome in Fushigi Yugi, Ryuho in s-CRY-ed, Lancer in Fate/Zero, Kyosuke Natsume in the Little Busters! series, and Akihiko Sanada in the Persona 3 series and its animated movie adaptations. He has also shown his range by taking on comedic and eccentric roles, such as Softon in Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo and the titular character in Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto. His filmography also includes a wide range of characters, such as Seto Kaiba in the first Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, Silva in Shaman King, Tokiya Mikagami in Flame of Recca, Best Jeanist in My Hero Academia, Garou in One-Punch Man, Cherry Blossom in SK8 the Infinity, and Dio Brando in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood OVA. Beyond anime, he has voiced characters in numerous video game franchises, most notably Marth from the Fire Emblem series and characters in the Super Robot Wars series, where he also served as sound supervisor for the 2008 game Super Robot Wars Z.
Midorikawa's vocal quality is noted for its distinct, somewhat flat tone, which he can modulate to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from sexy and exotic to cool, cute, and manly. His performances have inspired later voice actors, including Shinnosuke Tachibana and Koji Yusa, who cited his role as Heero Yuy as an inspiration for their own careers. He has also been active as a singer, having been a member of the voice actor unit E.M.U. (Entertainment Music Unit) in the 1990s and later forming the duo Zero Phoenix with fellow voice actor Nobutoshi Canna. In a unique honor, he accepted the "Best Jeanist Award" in 2024 on behalf of his character Best Jeanist from My Hero Academia, who won a special contribution award.
