Description
Li Xingke is a military officer of the Chinese Federation who appears as a major character in the second season of the anime. He is a tall young man with long black hair and purple eyes, and he always carries a sword. His background is rooted in an ancient family, and during his time as a low-ranking official, he was caught administering medicine to a prisoner and faced severe punishment. His life was spared by the then seven-year-old Empress Tianzi, an act of kindness that inspired deep gratitude. In response, he entered officer school and, before leaving the Vermillion Forbidden City, made a vow to one day show the Empress the world outside. This encounter forged an unwavering sense of loyalty in him.
In terms of personality, Xingke is fiercely devoted to Tianzi and driven by a desire to free her from the control of the High Eunuchs, who treat her as a mere figurehead. He is calculating and politically astute, willing to manipulate situations to advance his goals. He initially views the Black Knights with hostility, but after they help rescue the Empress, he begins to sympathize with their cause. He possesses a strong sense of justice and is willing to sacrifice personal aspirations for the greater good. His determination is balanced by a chronic illness that gradually weakens him, causing him to cough up blood during battle, a condition that limits the time he has to achieve his objectives.
Xingke's primary motivation is to rescue the Empress from the eunuchs and restore her authority. He works within a faction opposed to the High Eunuchs and actively prepares a coup d'état. Later, he seeks to use the Black Knights as a tool to aid his plans for China, though he eventually aligns with them more genuinely after their shared victory.
His role in the story begins with a cameo in the first season, where he listens remotely to Zero's announcement. He makes his full debut in the second season as an attendant to the eunuch Gao Hai in Area 11. During the standoff at the Chinese Federation Consulate, he orchestrates Gao Hai's death and secures an alliance with the Black Knights. After the founding of the United Federation of Nations, he becomes the supreme commander of the Black Knights. In the decisive battle at Mt. Fuji, he fights on the front lines against Lelouch.
Key relationships include his bond with Empress Tianzi, which is the emotional core of his character. He shares a mutual respect with Kallen Kozuki after recognizing her piloting skills. Lelouch vi Britannia describes him as a man blessed with intelligence equal to his own and strength comparable to Suzaku Kururugi, but cursed with limited time. Zhou Xianglin is his close associate who is aware of his illness.
Over the course of the story, Xingke transitions from a lone operative working against the eunuchs to a key leader in the Black Knights. His development involves learning to trust allies and fighting for a broader cause beyond just rescuing the Empress, culminating in his frontline participation in the final battle despite his failing health.
Xingke possesses exceptional combat abilities, matching Suzaku Kururugi in close combat and sword skills. He is capable of drawing, striking, and sheathing his blade so quickly that opponents do not perceive the movement. He also uses rope darts in combat. His strategic and political intelligence rivals that of Lelouch, allowing him to navigate complex diplomatic and military situations. He pilots the Knightmare Frame Shen Hu, which is equipped with a rope dart weapon. His primary limitation is his chronic illness, which progressively weakens him and threatens to cut his life short.
