Description
Ata Ibusuki is a central character in the anime series, recognized as the 142nd student council president of Blain High School, where he is also a second-year student in class 2-B. He is known for his distinctive appearance, characterized by very long, beautiful hair that he typically styles in a high ponytail.
Personality wise, Ata is a hard-working and diligent individual, a trait that enabled him to become student council president during his second year, which is considered unusual. He possesses a strong sense of duty and pride in his role. However, beneath his composed and authoritative exterior lies a deep-seated inferiority complex, particularly towards his childhood friend, Kyotaro Shuzenji. This complex stems from a childhood incident where he felt ignored and left behind by Kyotaro and another friend, Ryoma Kirishima, leading to a ten-year-long grudge and a competitive, often confrontational attitude towards Kyotaro. Despite this, he is not entirely inflexible, as he is shown to reluctantly accept a strawberry ice cream from a junior and watches over his student council colleagues.
Ata's primary motivation throughout the story is driven by this unresolved childhood misunderstanding. His relentless pursuit to surpass and confront Kyotaro is fueled by a feeling of being inferior to someone who appears effortlessly successful. The resolution of this personal conflict becomes a key turning point for his character. When the misunderstanding is finally cleared, he reconciles with Kyotaro, letting go of a decade of misplaced resentment.
In the story, Ata is first introduced as a strict student council president who takes issue with Kyotaro's lackadaisical behavior. He is subsequently chosen by the prince Furanui de Shakin Hoñarara to become one of his knights. Upon forming a contract with Furanui, he gains the ability to transform into a magical knight named Ritta Dearment, specifically associated with the diamond symbol jewel. He becomes a core member of the knight group Edelstein, which operates under the prince's command. His role often puts him in direct opposition to the Earth Defense Club, with Kyotaro being a member of that club.
Key relationships define much of his character arc. His relationship with Kyotaro Shuzenji is the most central and complex; what begins as a one-sided rivalry and antagonism born from misunderstanding eventually develops into a reconciled friendship. With his own colleagues, he maintains a formal but supportive dynamic. He relies on the vice-president, third-year Taiju Unazuki, for support, while he is shown to be a dependable senior to first-year Masa Shirahone. In fact, Ata is noted to call only Masa by his first name, indicating a unique closeness.
A notable aspect of his character development is the resolution of his decade-long grudge. The conflict reaches its peak when a shared crisis forces the group to work together, and the childhood memory is revisited. Kyotaro reveals he had not ignored Ata but had gone to look for him, which allows Ata to finally let go of his anger and hurt, leading to a heartfelt reconciliation where they shake hands. Before this, he is often seen with a stern or displeased expression, particularly when observing Kyotaro, but he becomes more at ease after their conflict is resolved.
Regarding abilities, as a knight under contract with Prince Furanui, Ata possesses magical powers that allow him to transform. In his transformed state as Ritta Dearment, he fights alongside the other members of Edelstein to protect the prince and confront their enemies. His abilities are tied to his magical gem, the diamond, and are utilized in battle scenarios typical of the magical guardian genre.
