Description
Isaki is a merman dwelling in the ocean near Shima Kawauchi's coastal town. Before meeting Shima, he lived with loneliness, observing humans from afar. He particularly noticed Shima's frequent distress and solitary crying, which captured his ongoing attention. Isaki later explained that a story about a mermaid princess watching over a prince influenced his decision to watch Shima.
When Shima nearly drowned after plunging into the ocean to recover his deceased grandfather's memorial plate, Isaki intervened and saved him. Hearing Shima express deep loneliness while dazed, Isaki voluntarily pledged to stay by his side for as long as necessary. This commitment drove him to leave his aquatic home and move into Shima's house on land, where Shima named him "Isaki".
Living together, Isaki adapted to terrestrial life, sharing meals and daily routines with Shima. He showed attentiveness to Shima's emotional state, often questioning him when he seemed troubled. Once, Isaki challenged Shima's attempts to downplay his own loneliness, urging him toward greater honesty. He also joined Shima on nighttime bicycle trips to the beach, demonstrating a desire to share meaningful moments.
Isaki developed romantic feelings for Shima over time, though he initially kept them private. He regularly awaited Shima's return from school, growing increasingly despondent as Shima spent more time with new friends and in extracurricular activities. Misinterpreting Shima's expanding social life as a diminished need for his companionship, Isaki concluded his presence was unnecessary. Without explanation, he returned to the ocean.
When Shima pursued him and jumped into the sea, Isaki rescued him from drowning again. During this encounter, Isaki openly declared his love for Shima but expressed reluctance to return to land, citing fatigue with terrestrial life and reiterating his belief that Shima no longer needed him. Only after Shima reciprocated his feelings and explicitly stated his enduring need for Isaki did the merman agree to reunite with him.
