Description
Edgar J. C. Ashenbert is the male protagonist of the story, a young man of around twenty years old who possesses striking good looks, characterized by his golden blond hair and distinctive ash mauve or gray-violet eyes. He is tall and carries himself with an innate elegance and aristocratic grace that makes him stand out in London's high society. Edgar presents himself as the descendant of the legendary Blue Knight Earl, a title that has been without a recognized heir for three centuries, as part of his scheme to reclaim a position of power and respectability.

Edgar's background is marked by profound tragedy and a harrowing past. He was originally born as Edgar Leland, the heir to the prestigious Silvanford Dukedom, the highest rank in the British peerage. When he was a child of about twelve or thirteen, his parents were murdered in a devastating attack that also burned down the family home, an event the world believed had killed the entire family. In reality, Edgar was kidnapped and taken to America by a shadowy organization led by a figure known only as the Prince. For years, he was branded as a white slave, framed as a mass murderer, and forced to flee, all while being groomed to become the Prince’s successor and eventual vessel for the Prince's memories and power. Despite this brutal conditioning, Edgar managed to retain his own will and personality, eventually escaping the organization along with several loyal followers, including the siblings Raven and Ermine. Stripped of his original name and honor, he assumed the Ashenbert surname and dedicated himself to finding the legendary Sword of Merrow, an artifact that would allow him to claim the title of Blue Knight Earl and fabricate a new, honorable identity for himself.

In terms of personality, Edgar is a complex and charismatic figure who presents a charming and flirtatious facade. He possesses refined manners, a quick wit, and a natural leadership quality that draws people to him. However, this gentlemanly exterior often gives way to a more calculating and ruthless side, a product of the harsh lessons he learned while captive. He is willing to be manipulative and to do whatever is necessary to achieve his goals, a trait that he sometimes fears is making him more like the Prince he despises. Despite this darkness, he is also described as being fundamentally optimistic and possessing a childlike, sincere side. He is severely possessive, especially of those he considers his own, a trait that becomes very pronounced in his relationship with Lydia.

At the start of the story, Edgar's primary motivations are rooted in revenge against the Prince for destroying his family and stealing his life, and in his desire to regain a respectable title at any cost. To this end, he seeks out Lydia Carlton, a fairy doctor with the rare ability to see fairies, believing her unique eyes to be the key to locating the Sword of Merrow. While he originally treats her as a pawn in his schemes, he gradually becomes genuinely fascinated by and attached to her. His role in the story is that of a master strategist and leader, often concocting elaborate plans and navigating the dangerous waters of both human social politics and the fairy realm. He acts as the driving force of the plot, with his quest for the sword and subsequent war against the Prince forming the central conflict.

Edgar’s most significant relationship is with Lydia Carlton. His interactions with her evolve from manipulation to deep, possessive love. Despite constantly professing his affection and eventually becoming engaged to her, his early actions, including flirtations with other women and a tendency to be secretive, make it difficult for Lydia to trust his sincerity. Nevertheless, she is the one person who sees beyond his charming act to the wounded man within, and his love for her ultimately changes his priorities. Another key figure is Raven, his devoted servant who escaped the Prince's organization with him and remains fiercely loyal.

Throughout the narrative, Edgar undergoes significant development. His all-consuming goal of revenge at any cost begins to shift as he becomes more entwined with Lydia and as he accepts the responsibilities of his new title. After being saved by the Ashenbert family's banshee, he resolves to no longer treat his own life as cavalierly, understanding that as the Blue Knight Earl, he has a duty to persevere. His internal struggle with the dark nature of the "Prince" is a constant theme, culminating in him absorbing the Prince's memories to save Lydia, an act that puts his own identity at risk. This leads to a period where he loses nearly a decade of his memories, including those of Lydia, but he finds himself drawn to her all over again and chooses to rebuild his life with her.

In terms of abilities, Edgar possesses no inherent magical or fairy-seeing powers; in fact, the sword of the Blue Knight Earl physically harms him because his blood has been "dirtied". His strength lies in his sharp intellect, strategic genius, and charismatic leadership. He is a skilled swordsman, carrying a concealed blade in his walking stick, and is a master of deception, able to convincingly pose as an enemy to infiltrate their ranks. He is also known for being prepared for the worst, having once carried poison for self-destruction should the Prince's influence overtake him. His true power is his unyielding will to survive and protect the family he has built for himself.
