Description
Rail Claymore, also spelled Raily Claymore in some materials, is a supporting character in the anime Lost Universe. He is a 27-year-old lieutenant in the intergalactic police force, sometimes referred to as the Interstellar Police or the Universal Guardians. He is tall, with black hair and dark eyes, and is described as handsome and sharp-minded. His manner is sly and calculating, and he carries himself with the confidence of someone used to working within the system while still bending it to his advantage. His secretary, Nina Mercury, has a pronounced crush on him and is frequently shown spilling coffee on him, much to his irritation.
His background is rooted in his career as a police officer, and he regularly acts as a contact between the authorities and the crew of the Sword Breaker, the ship operated by the trouble contractor Kane Blueriver. Rail often supplies Kane with assignments and information, but the relationship is less a true friendship and more a practical arrangement of mutual benefit. The two are on familiar terms, yet they are frequently at odds, and Rail has a habit of teasing Kane by giving him the worst jobs with little or no pay. This dynamic shows his opportunistic streak, as he is willing to use his connections for his own convenience.
As the series unfolds, Rail's ambitions lead him down a darker path. He betrays Kane and the intergalactic police by stealing a Lost Ship for himself, believing that commanding such a vessel will give him power or advantage. He soon discovers that he cannot control the Lost Ship, and his attempt to do so leaves him severely wounded. He is rescued by Nina and Millie, an experience that forces him to confront the consequences of his choices. By the time of the final battle between Kane and the Spreader of Darkness, Rail has rethought his loyalties. He joins Millie and the crew and offers whatever help he can, demonstrating that beneath his cunning exterior he genuinely cares for Kane and the people who once considered him a friend.
In terms of abilities, Rail is a competent and intelligent officer whose investigative skills and knowledge of police procedure make him valuable in a crisis. He is resourceful, quick to read situations, and skilled at maneuvering people and circumstances to get what he wants. His greatest strengths lie in his mental agility and his ability to function in the gray areas of law enforcement, though his overconfidence in his own judgment is also what leads him to overreach when he seizes the Lost Ship. Over the course of the story, he develops from a self-serving opportunist into someone willing to put himself at risk for the sake of others, making his arc one of gradual redemption through hardship and genuine connection.
