Description
Kyousuke Natsume is one of the central characters in Little Busters!, serving as the de facto leader and founding member of the group. He is a third-year high school student, recognizable by his tall, lean build, unkempt short brown hair, and sharp, often half-lidded eyes that convey either amusement or deep calculation. His school uniform is typically worn loosely, and he is rarely seen without a faint, mischievous smile.

Born into an ordinary family, Kyousuke is the older brother of Rin Natsume. His background prior to high school is not extensively detailed, but it is clear that he took the initiative to form the Little Busters during his first year. He organized the group around a shared love of baseball and camaraderie, recruiting his childhood friend Masato Inohara and the quiet Kengo Miyazawa, as well as his younger sister Rin and the protagonist Riki Naoe.

Personality-wise, Kyousuke is charismatic, eccentric, and relentlessly energetic. He has a flair for the dramatic, often creating absurd challenges, nicknames, and competitions to keep the group entertained. His speeches are frequently grandiose, filled with passion about youth, friendship, and the glory of doing meaningless things together. Despite his wild and sometimes childish exterior, Kyousuke possesses a highly analytical and strategic mind. He is extremely observant and understands people’s emotions and weaknesses better than anyone. He hides a profound sense of responsibility and a deep, painful awareness of reality behind his theatrical mask.

His primary motivation is the preservation of the Little Busters and the happiness of its members, especially Rin and Riki. Kyousuke believes that the strength gained through genuine friendship can overcome any tragedy. He is driven by a fear of stagnation and loneliness, pushing the group into constant activity to forge unbreakable bonds. Unlike his carefree demeanor suggests, many of his actions are calculated to prepare the others for a hidden, painful truth about their world.

In the story’s structure, Kyousuke acts as the mastermind and catalyst. He sets up the baseball team and later initiates the “battles” and tasks that the group must solve. He is rarely directly involved in the individual heroine routes, but his influence looms over the central mystery of the repeating world. He often withholds information from Riki and Rin, forcing them to grow and make their own decisions. His role becomes critical during the final arc, where he reveals himself as the architect of the artificial world designed to give Riki and Rin the emotional strength to survive a real-world disaster.

Key relationships include his bond with Rin, which is complex: he is protective of her but deliberately pushes her away at times to encourage independence. With Riki, Kyousuke acts as an older brother figure and a rival, testing him to become strong enough to support Rin. His dynamic with Masato and Kengo is that of an eccentric leader who keeps them engaged through mock battles and absurd drills, though he deeply respects their loyalty.

Development occurs mainly through the revelation of Kyousuke’s hidden burdens. Initially seen as a carefree genius, he is later shown to be exhausted, lonely, and desperate. He carries the weight of knowing that the world they inhabit is a dream-like construct and that his own real body is critically injured. Over time, he learns to let go of control and trust Riki and Rin to finish what he started. His arc ends with acceptance of his limits and relief that his friends have surpassed him.

Notable abilities include exceptional strategic planning, leadership, and psychological insight. He is physically agile and skilled in baseball, having created the team’s signature “Little Busters” swing and numerous combination plays. He also demonstrates near-superhuman endurance when enacting his long-term scheme, managing the artificial world’s rules while hiding his exhaustion. While not a brawler like Masato, Kyousuke holds his own in their many comedic fights. His true ability lies in his willpower and his talent for creating meaning out of chaos, turning simple friendship into a force that can defy fate.
