Description
Taka Sukunami is the modern reincarnation of Tamahome, a Celestial Warrior of Suzaku, created using the bond between Miaka Yuki and Tamahome. This process sealed Tamahome's memories into seven jewel orbs, leaving Taka with only fragmented dreams of his past life in ancient China. He physically resembles Tamahome but has short black hair, brown eyes, and lacks the celestial forehead mark. Taka dresses in modern Japanese casual wear, favoring sweaters, button-ups, layered jackets, khakis, or slacks. He wears Miaka's engagement ring on a silver chain.

Introduced as a Tokyo university student working part-time as a waiter and later a school coach, Taka attends Seinan University with Keisuke Yuuki and Tetsuya, joining their Ancient History Research Club. He has been in a relationship with Miaka for eight months after Keisuke introduced them. Aware of his past-life identity through Miaka but lacking concrete memories, Taka relies on emotional instincts regarding their destined connection. His life is disrupted when the demon god Tenkou manipulates events to draw him and Miaka back into "The Universe of the Four Gods" book.

Within the book during OVA 2, Taka's quest involves recovering the sealed memory orbs to prevent his disappearance and counter Tenkou. Suzaku reveals Taka is Tamahome's true reincarnation, needing the orbs to restore divine power. Accompanied by Miaka and aided by Tasuki and Chichiri, Taka locates orbs guarded by spirits of deceased Suzaku warriors. Recovering each orb restores aspects of his past identity, including martial arts and chi manipulation. Hotohori temporarily possesses Taka to interact with his son, deepening Taka's integration of his dual existence. Reuniting all orbs solidifies his identity as both Tamahome's continuation and his own person.

Approximately ten to twelve years later in Eikoden (OVA 3), Taka is married to Miaka and expecting their first child. Their life is disrupted when student Mayo Sakaki, infatuated with Taka, enters the book, becomes Priestess of Suzaku, and causes Miaka to faint and their unborn child to vanish. Learning Mayo's actions endanger the book world, Taka re-enters to confront Mayo and rescue Konan from spreading corruption. Miaka subconsciously transfers their unborn daughter into Mayo's womb as a new Shinzaho, creating a spiritual link. Taka works with reincarnated child forms of deceased Suzaku warriors and survivors Tasuki and Chichiri to reunite the celestial team. He defeats the false Suzaku entity exploiting Mayo, using his restored memories and powers. Taka returns to the real world; Miaka awakens and later gives birth to their daughter, Hikari.

Physically, Taka retains Tamahome's athletic build but has a subdued, contemporary style outside the book. Inside the universe of the four gods, he wears traditional Chinese attire similar to Tamahome's: a light purple robe with violet and yellow trim, an orange sash, and a vermillion bird emblem. His celestial mark reappears as he fully regains his past-life memories.

Personality-wise, Taka is quiet, introspective, reserved, and often lost in thought. He demonstrates deep loyalty and bravery, willing to sacrifice himself for friends. Struggling to reconcile Tamahome's legacy with his own identity causes significant internal conflict and self-doubt. He relies on guidance from fellow warriors, particularly Nuriko early on, to navigate these dual identities. As a strategist, he devises clever battle tactics, showcasing analytical thinking alongside combat skills.

Key relationships drive his development. His bond with Miaka remains central, motivating him across all media. He interacts with and mentors the reincarnated child versions of Hotohori, Nuriko, Chiriko, and Mitsukake during Eikoden as they regain their warrior roles. His dynamic with surviving warriors Tasuki and Chichiri evolves from initial memory-related tensions to collaborative trust. Antagonistically, he confronts Mayo, whose obsessive feelings create crises testing his protective instincts toward Miaka and the stability of both worlds.
