OVA
Description
Naoki Shinjo is a supporting character in the Future GPX Cyber Formula series, introduced as a highly accomplished racing driver. Before entering Cyber Formula competition, he achieved significant success as a two-time European Formula 3 champion. His talent caught the attention of Kyoko Aoi, the head of Aoi Formula, who scouted him for the Cyber Formula world. After passing the Japanese qualifying rounds, Shinjo made his debut in the 2015 season, quickly establishing himself as a top contender by winning the All-Japan Grand Prix.

Shinjo’s personality is initially marked by fierce competitiveness and immense self-confidence, traits that stem from his impressive track record. However, this confidence is also the source of a critical flaw: he struggles under the weight of his own expectations and the pressure to consistently perform at the highest level. This internal conflict defines much of his early character arc, as he faces setbacks that challenge his identity as a driver. His journey is one of overcoming hardship and learning to channel his ambition in a healthier direction. In the OVA series, especially in Cyber Formula Zero, he experiences a dramatic fall from grace but ultimately makes a determined comeback, rising from failure and proving his resilience.

Shinjo’s role in the story is that of a rival and peer to the main protagonist, Hayato Kazami, and other top drivers. He competes for the Aoi Formula team and is a regular presence in the Cyber Formula Grand Prix. His key relationships include a romantic dynamic with Miki Jounouchi, who becomes a source of emotional support. Throughout the series, Shinjo matures from a self-centered ace into a more balanced competitor, learning to value teamwork and perseverance. His notable abilities are his raw driving skill, strategic racing instincts, and the determination to rebuild himself after defeats. Though he never becomes the central focus, his character development is a significant part of the series’ exploration of the pressures of elite motorsports.
