Description
Kyōsuke Natsume is the founder and leader of the Little Busters, a group of friends formed during childhood. He is one year older than the other core members and attends the same high school. He is the older brother of Rin Natsume. His birthday is May 4, and he stands at 174 centimeters tall.
Kyōsuke presents a charismatic and cheerful exterior. He frequently devises absurd or playful ideas and challenges, but he always follows them with a fun or reasonable explanation. He possesses an exceeding level of competence in almost every area, yet this is balanced by a single-minded pursuit of enjoyment and a deep, perceptive compassion for his friends. He is respected as a guiding figure by all members of the group and serves as a particular role model for Riki Naoe. Despite his composed demeanor, he can be emotionally vulnerable with those close to him, revealing a surprisingly fragile side. He is also noted for fixating on younger girls, a tendency he denies.
His primary motivation is to protect and strengthen his friends, especially Riki and his sister Rin. He is the one who initiated the creation of an artificial world, constructed from the collective memories of the group, in the wake of a devastating bus accident. Within this looping reality, his goal is to repeatedly relive their last school semester together, giving Riki and Rin the opportunity to grow stronger and become independent enough to face the tragic reality that awaits them in the real world. He believes that if they can overcome their personal weaknesses and form unbreakable bonds, they can survive and move forward.
In the story, Kyōsuke acts as the driving force behind the narrative's central mystery. At first, he orchestrates endless fun, games, and camaraderie for the group. As the loops progress and he sees the need for more serious growth, he escalates his methods, setting increasingly difficult trials for Riki and Rin. His approach is strategic and calculated; he is willing to act as an antagonist figure to force them to confront their deepest fears and traumas. His role shifts from a carefree big brother to a determined, almost desperate, architect of their salvation.
His key relationships define his character arc. With Riki Naoe, he is a mentor and older brother figure, constantly challenging him to find his own strength and purpose. With his sister Rin Natsume, his relationship is complex; he loves her deeply but his harsh methods during the loops cause her significant mental anguish, eventually leading to a breakdown. He also shares deep bonds with the other Little Busters members: Masato Inohara, Kengo Miyazawa, Kyōsuke is the glue that holds their friendship together, understanding each of their strengths and weaknesses.
Kyōsuke undergoes significant development throughout the story, most notably during the Refrain arc. He starts as an seemingly infallible leader who believes he can control everything. However, he is forced to confront the unintended harm his plans cause, particularly to Rin. He realizes that his attempts to shield them may be more harmful than helpful. This leads him to acknowledge the need for sacrifice. His final, critical act involves a desperate struggle in the real world to prevent the bus from exploding, crawling toward a gasoline leak and ultimately using his own body to stop it, an act that nearly costs him his life. In the true ending, after everyone is saved, he is the last member to return to the school from the hospital, having fully recovered.
His notable abilities extend beyond normal human capability within the context of the artificial world. He possesses the unique power to travel between the real world and the constructed reality. This allows him to monitor events in both places and, in the visual novel, manipulate his own position within the real world by reenacting the state of death he felt during the initial accident. He uses his strategic mind to guide the group through challenges, relying on intelligence and planning rather than raw physical strength, though he demonstrates notable resilience and determination in critical moments.
